About Palio di Isola Dovarese

Every September, Isola Dovarese travels back in time for its famous Palio: three days of historical reenactment where the town in the province of Cremona relives the splendor of the Gonzaga era. Four districts - San Giuseppe, Le Gerre, Porta Tenca, and San Bernardino - compete in the rooster race, the stilts race, and the ancient game of Magher, amidst costume parades, medieval taverns, evening shows, and markets. One of the most evocative historical reenactments in the Lombardy plains, held in the town's splendid arcaded square.

A dive into the Gonzaga era

In Isola Dovarese, in the Province of Cremona, the Palio is much more than a festival: it's a journey through time that brings the town back to the splendor of the Renaissance, when this corner of the plains was linked to the lordship of the Gonzaga family. For three days, the splendid arcaded square, designed in the Gonzaga style and one of the most beautiful in Lombardy, transforms into a medieval and Renaissance stage animated by hundreds of costumed participants.

The four districts in competition

The heart of the event is the competition between the town's four districts: San Giuseppe, Le Gerre, Porta Tenca, and San Bernardino. The winning district is determined by three traditional and spectacular races: the rooster race, the stilts race, and the ancient game of Magher. The competition is accompanied by historical parades, dances, flag-throwers, and drummers who fill the town's streets.

Taverns, markets, and evening shows

During the three days, the town comes alive with medieval taverns - the Taverna del Viandante, the Taverna de li Sette Peccati, the Taverna dell'Aquila d'Oro, and the Taverna de la Tinca - where you can taste traditional dishes, as well as period markets with artisans and ancient crafts. Every evening, a themed show is staged, part of a narrative that runs through the entire event, culminating in a grand finale with fireworks.

A long-standing reenactment

The Palio di Isola Dovarese is one of the longest-running and most meticulously organized historical reenactments in the Region of Lombardy, attracting visitors from all over the Po Valley every year. The attention to costumes, the authenticity of the taverns, and the natural backdrop offered by the Gonzaga-style square make it an unmissable event for lovers of history and traditions.
