Renaissance procession and donkey race between the town's districts
In the heart of the Cremona plain, along the lands of Oglio Po, the small municipality of Solarolo Rainerio (Province of Cremona) preserves one of the most cherished traditions in its calendar: the Palio delle Contrade. Every year, on the first Sunday of September, the village comes alive in conjunction with the patronal feast of San Nicola da Tolentino, transforming into a large open-air stage.
Preceding and accompanying the Palio is the historical procession in Renaissance costumes from the 15th-16th centuries, which winds through the streets of the town, evoking the atmosphere of the era of the Campi, the family of Cremonese painters whose works are preserved in the local parish church. Ladies, knights, flag-wavers, and participants bring to life a reenactment that is a source of pride for the Solarolo community.
The most anticipated moment is the donkey race, around which the competition between the town's districts revolves. Following the modelโin a rural and ironic versionโof the more famous Palio di Siena, local jockeys compete for victory by riding donkeys through the village streets, amidst traditional games, cheering, and popular entertainment.
The Palio delle Contrade is not just a competition: it is the moment when Solarolo Rainerio celebrates its identity, combining the religious dimension of the patronal feast with the civil and convivial one. Food stalls, music, and initiatives complete a day that tells the genuine soul of this Lombardy village, where the traditions of peasant civilization are still alive and carefully preserved.
The 2026 edition of the Palio delle Contrade will be held, according to tradition, on the first Sunday of September, i.e., Sunday, September 6, on the occasion of the patronal feast of San Nicola da Tolentino. The day will feature the historical procession in 15th-16th century costumes, popular games between the districts, and the donkey race along the village streets.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition will be published by the Municipality of Solarolo Rainerio in the weeks preceding the event. The traditional structure includes: a historical procession in Renaissance costumes through the village streets, traditional games between the districts, and a donkey race, with food stalls and musical moments accompanying the patronal feast.
