About Palio di Faiano

Every summer, the village of Faiano, in the municipality of Pontecagnano Faiano near Salerno, splits into six districts to compete in the Palio di Faiano. This week-long event features traditional games, sports, skill challenges, and culinary contests involving nearly a thousand participants. Established in 2017 by the Associazione Sviluppo, the Palio revives the local tournament traditions of the 1970s and 80s, turning the village's streets and squares into a vibrant, open-air arena filled with colorful flags, parades, and community celebrations.

Six districts, six colors, one village

The Palio di Faiano is an annual summer festival that divides the village of Faiano, in the municipality of Pontecagnano Faiano (Salerno, Campania), into six competing districts. Each district is represented by a specific color and animal: the White Bear (Orso bianco) from the former Licinoso area, the Red Seahorse (Cavalluccio marino rosso) from the center of Faiano around Piazza Garibaldi, the Blue Shark (Squalo blu) from the San Benedetto church area, the Yellow Lion (Leone giallo) of Trivio Granata, the Orange Fox (Volpe arancione) of Acquara, and the Green Turtle (Tartaruga verde) of Baroncino.

For several days, flags, banners, and decorations transform the streets and squares. Nearly a thousand people, from children to adults, take to the field to win the Palio banner. It is a true community competition where local rivalry serves as a catalyst for celebration and togetherness.

From the challenges of Father Giuseppe Salomone to today's Palio

The Palio did not appear out of thin air. In the 1970s and 80s, district challenges were a local custom promoted by Father Giuseppe Salomone, a key figure at the local oratory. That tradition eventually faded until 2017, when a group of volunteers from the Associazione Sviluppo decided to revive it. The first edition took place on September 2nd and 3rd, 2017, featuring a parade through the village streets, a blessing, and an awards ceremony at the oratory.

The event has grown significantly since then. In 2019, the third edition spanned a full week between August and September, while recent editions have settled into the heart of August, with a program lasting up to eight days.

The competitions: sports, skills, and cuisine

The Palio di Faiano is not a horse race, but a multidisciplinary tournament designed so that each district can field different teams in a variety of events. Over the years, the program has included:

  • sports such as volleyball, running races, and bocce;
  • obstacle courses and team skill tests;
  • board game tournaments and traditional folk games;
  • culinary challenges between district cooks;
  • convivial evenings in the neighborhoods with music, stalls, and food stands.

Competitions are reserved for district residents, and in past editions, a minimum age of 16 was required for some events. The points accumulated day by day determine the winning district, which is announced during the closing ceremony.

Parades, torchlight processions, and ceremonies

The opening is one of the most anticipated moments: a parade of the districts with their banners, an evening torchlight procession accompanied by drummers, followed by a blessing. The closing ceremony, featuring the proclamation of the winner and the awarding of the banner, is usually held at the oratory or in the village's public spaces before a large crowd.

PalioArte: where the Palio meets art

Alongside the competitions, some editions have hosted PalioArte, an exhibition that brings works by local artists into the district spaces. In 2019, the exhibition was dedicated to the theme of water, a key element of the area's identity; in another edition, the Lion district set up an open-air exhibition at Trivio Granata inspired by Fauvism, featuring works by local artists.

Organizers

The event is promoted by the Associazione Sviluppo, led by Marco Erra, in collaboration with numerous local entities: Atletico Faiano, the "Don Giuseppe Salomone" Oratory, Tyrrhenoi, Sveja, Gera, Carpfischers Team Faiano, and the youth committee "Un passo avanti". The Palio is held under the patronage of the Campania Region, the Province of Salerno, and the Municipality of Pontecagnano Faiano, which includes it in its "Un'Estate da vivere" summer program.

Faiano and the Picentino territory

Faiano is the hillside village of Pontecagnano Faiano, a municipality on the Sele Plain overlooking the Gulf of Salerno, known for its Eco-Archaeological Park and the National Archaeological Museum linked to ancient Picentia. In a region better known for its sea, the Salerno-Costa d'Amalfi International Airport, and its proximity to the Amalfi Coast, the Palio is one of the key events that keeps the village's identity and intergenerational bonds alive.

Palio di Faiano — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Palio di Faiano has not yet been officially announced. In recent years, the event has taken place in mid-August in the village of Faiano, Pontecagnano Faiano; in 2025, the competitions between the six districts were held from August 10th to 17th. Dates and programs are usually released by the Associazione Sviluppo and the Municipality a few weeks before the start of the challenges.

As of the writing of this page, no official dates have been published for the Palio di Faiano 2026. The Municipality of Pontecagnano Faiano has not yet released the updated summer program, and the Associazione Sviluppo, which organizes the event, has not communicated the competition calendar.

The reference remains that of the last editions, all concentrated in the second week of August, with the opening entrusted to the district parade and torchlight procession, followed by a week of sports, folk games, and culinary challenges between the White Bear, Red Seahorse, Blue Shark, Yellow Lion, Orange Fox, and Green Turtle.

We recommend checking for updates on the official social media channels of the Palio di Faiano and the Municipality's portal before planning your visit.
