The summer challenge between the seven districts of this Ciociaria village
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
In the municipality of Castrocielo, a small village in the Ciociaria region of the Frosinone province, in the heart of Lazio, the Palio delle Contrade is the most anticipated event of the summer. It is not a horse race like the more famous palios, but a lively popular re-enactment where the seven districts of the town compete in a series of games inspired by rural culture and traditions. The rivalry between the districts, fierce and passionate during the competitions, melts away each evening into one big community celebration.
The soul of the Palio lies in the districts, each with its own colors, banners, and supporters. Competing for the banner are:
Over two hundred participants, including athletes and costumed figures, bring the two days to life, proudly defending the honor of their neighborhood.
The program revolves around traditional folk gamesโtests of strength, skill, and speed rooted in the rural life of the past. Among the most popular events are the tug-of-war, sack races, pot-breaking, the cannate race, relay races, the 'stroncone' game, and the unmissable greasy pole. There is also the traditional briscola tournament, which gathers enthusiasts of all ages around the tables. With each event, the districts accumulate points until the final winner is declared and the palio is awarded.
The days open with the parade of the districts in costume along the streets of the historic center, a colorful procession featuring banners, drums, and participants. Ample space is reserved for the little ones with the Children's Palio, which involves the new generations in the games and passes on the identity of the districts from father to son.
As in every self-respecting village festival, good food accompanies the games: the food stalls of the districts offer traditional Ciociaria dishes and local products, while music and shows enliven the evenings until late at night. It is an opportunity for residents and visitors to meet and rediscover a sense of community belonging.
The Palio is also an invitation to discover Castrocielo and its territory, dominated by the remains of the medieval castle and overlooking the Liri Valley. A few steps from the village lies the charming Capo d'Acqua pond, fed by a spring that in Roman times supplied the so-called Forme d'Aquino, built to defend the ancient city of Aquinum. Participating in the Palio means experiencing an authentic tradition in one of the most characteristic villages in the province of Frosinone.
The 2026 edition of the Palio delle Contrade of Castrocielo is expected, as per tradition, in the month of August, in the historic center of the municipality in the province of Frosinone. At the moment, the organizers have not yet published the official dates or the detailed program. The usual formula is expected: district costume parade, folk games (tug-of-war, sack races, pot-breaking, greasy pole), briscola tournament, Children's Palio, and food stalls. Updated information will be shared on the Palio's Facebook page.
Castrocielo is located in the province of Frosinone, along the Liri Valley. By car, it can be reached from the A1 Rome-Naples motorway, taking the Cassino exit and continuing on the Via Casilina (SS6) towards Aquino-Castrocielo. By train, the reference station is Roccasecca or Cassino, on the Rome-Naples line via Cassino, with connections by bus or taxi.
The Palio events take place in the historic center and are free to enter. Detailed schedules and dates for the next edition are published on the Palio's social media channels in the weeks leading up to the event.
We recommend wearing comfortable shoes to walk through the village streets and arriving early for the district parade. For accommodation, farmhouses and lodging facilities are available in the nearby towns of Aquino, Roccasecca, and Cassino.
