A Week-Long Challenge Between Districts
The Palio delle Contrade di Roè Volciano is the major summer festival in this municipality in Valle Sabbia, province of Brescia. For over a week, the four districts of the town — Leonessa, Aquila, Rovere, and Ulivo — compete for the palio through a long series of games and competitions involving the entire community. It is considered one of the longest palios in the region, capable of enlivening the town for most of July.
Games, Races, and Tradition
The program alternates skill tests with moments of pure fun: from barrel racing through the historic center streets to the chariot race (Quintana), from the 'palla bollata' challenge to five-a-side football and water volleyball tournaments, up to the diagonal 'cuccagna' (greased pole) and games for children. There is also a parade with costumed figures, district members, and a musical band, giving the event a historical flavour.
Flavours and Colours of the Palio
Every evening, the food stand and dancing nights with an orchestra accompany the competition, while the event culminates in the gastronomic evening "Palio, sapori e colori" (Palio, flavours and colours) and the final award ceremony for the winning district. The event is organised by the Comitato del Palio delle Contrade di Roè Volciano.
