The Rioni challenge and the Corsa dei Caratelli in the town of tanneries
In the heart of the Tuscan tanning district, in Ponte a Egola, a village in the municipality of San Miniato (Pisa), one of the most cherished events of the local calendar takes place every year in late June: the Palio del Cuoio. For a full week, Piazza Guido Rossa and the town streets fill with colors, sounds, and scents, turning this corner of Tuscany into a grand popular stage that blends artisanal tradition, athletic competition, and conviviality.
The bond between Ponte a Egola and leather processing is ancient: here, hides were tanned with tannin inside large wooden barrels called caratelli, which workers would roll back and forth in the tannery courtyards to ensure the tanning agent penetrated the leather. It was from this daily labor that the Palio del Cuoio was born in 1988, based on an idea by Father Gino Frediani. The event celebrates the identity of a town that has built its history and economy on leather, still represented today by the Consorzio Conciatori di Ponte a Egola.
The Palio features the town's six Rioni (districts), each with its own colors and identity: Tognarino (white-orange), Giuncheto (white-red), Leporaia (white-green), Le Fornaci (white-light blue), Il Ponte (white-yellow), and Piazzale Montevaso (white-black). The festival opens with the evocative Rioni parade in Piazza Guido Rossa and continues throughout the week with musical and dance performances, card tournaments, bingo nights, children's games, and mini-palios that build anticipation for the final challenge.
The highlight is the Corsa dei Caratelli, a relay race that closes the event on Sunday evening. The Rioni's athletes compete for the Palio by pushing a heavy 80 kg wooden barrel along a 117-meter straight track, repeating the course six times. It is a test of strength, technique, and teamwork that ignites the crowd and keeps everyone on the edge of their seats until the final sprint, followed by the awarding of the Palio and the closing show.
Alongside the competitions, the Palio del Cuoio is also a gastronomic occasion: food stalls open in the evening with local specialties, while the concurrent Fried Food and Bombolone Festival enriches the menu with traditional dishes. A festival that, in the heart of Tuscany and San Miniato, weaves together working-class memory, community spirit, and the joy of being together.
The 37th edition of the Palio del Cuoio takes place in Ponte a Egola (San Miniato) from Sunday, June 21 to Sunday, June 28, 2026, with the heart of the event in Piazza Guido Rossa. The 2026 edition is themed around the Sacred Heart of Jesus, to which the local parish is dedicated: a nod to the festival's origins and a message of peace and hospitality. This year's painted groppone (the banner) is signed by the Florentine artist Skim (Francesco Forconi), known for his "Harmonic Kaos" style blending graffiti, street art, and comics, under the artistic direction of Filippo Lotti. The week culminates with the challenge of the six Rioni in the Corsa dei Caratelli.
The detailed calendar of individual evenings (musical guests and shows) will be announced in the weeks leading up to the event.
