The Renaissance challenge between the four Contrade of Cerreto Guidi, at the foot of the Medici Villa
In the heart of Tuscany, among the hills of the municipality of Cerreto Guidi in the province of Florence, the Palio del Cerro is one of the most cherished events of the summer. Every first Saturday of September, the village is transformed: the streets fill with participants in 16th-century attire, the emblems of the Contrade flutter on the facades, and the Medici Villaโa masterpiece commissioned by the Medici family and now a site of cultural interestโserves as the natural backdrop for the challenge.
The re-enactment is rooted in the 16th-century festivities linked to the Medici dynasty and the figure of Cosimo I de' Medici, the Lord of Florence, who was deeply attached to this village where he had the famous Villa built. Cerreto Guidi also preserves the memory of the tragic story of Isabella de' Medici, Cosimo's daughter. The Palio, born in 1968, stages this very bond between the town and the dynasty that shaped its history, offering visitors the atmosphere of a Renaissance court.
The town is divided into four Contrade, which correspond to the ancient access gates to the village:
Each one fields its own members in the games and contributes to the grand historical pageant in costume that opens the evening.
The heart of the competition consists of five trials that blend skill, strength, and spectacle:
The winning Contrada receives the cencio, the hand-painted banner that celebrates the victory each year.
The festivities do not end with the main evening: the following weekend is dedicated to the Palio dei Ragazzi (Youth Palio), where the youngest participants try their hand at the same games adapted to their age, ensuring the continuity of a tradition passed down from generation to generation.
More than just a simple re-enactment, the Palio del Cerro is a festival of identity that unites the entire community of Cerreto Guidi. The setting of the Medici Villa, the meticulously crafted costumes, the drummers, and the flag-wavers make this evening an experience worth traveling to the Florentine hinterland for, far from the most crowded tourist circuits.
The 2026 edition of the Palio del Cerro is scheduled for Saturday, September 5, 2026, the first Saturday of the month according to tradition, in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II in Cerreto Guidi (FI). The evening, expected to run from approximately 9:00 PM to 11:00 PM, opens with the grand historical pageant in Renaissance costume that crosses the village up to the Medici Villa.
This is followed by the challenges between Porta Caracosta, Porta Fiorentina, Porta al Palagio, and Porta Santa Maria al Pozzolo in the five traditional games. The following weekend is dedicated to the Palio dei Ragazzi. An entrance fee is required.
The following weekend, the Palio dei Ragazzi takes place, with the same games adapted for children.
The detailed day-by-day program, with precise times for individual trials and side events, is published by the Pro Loco in the weeks leading up to the event.
