The horse race that ignites the six districts of this Sienese village
In the heart of the Province of Siena, nestled among the woods of the Sienese Maremma, the town of Monticiano celebrates its most anticipated day of the year with the Palio dei Rioni, a horse race that pits the village's six districts against each other in a thrilling challenge. It is a celebration of community and tradition, where the Palio passion typical of the Sienese territory is concentrated into a single, intense day in June.
The six districts vying for the drappellone are: Incrociata, Borgo, Piazza, Paretaio, Sodo, and Cerbaione. Each district entrusts its hopes to a jockey and a horse, assigned by draw in the hours leading up to the race. The rivalry between the districts brings the village to life all day long, with processions, colors, and the cheers of supporters filling the circuit.
The race takes place on the local track called Il Tamburo, carved into the urban fabric of Monticiano. Here, after the morning qualifying heats, the race that awards the Palio takes place in the afternoon. The blessing of the horses and the presentation of the district jackets to the jockeys precede the final challenge, following a ritual that blends sport and devotion.
The day is accompanied by the Franco Nobile Memorial, a race that honors a figure linked to the world of horse racing and the local Palio, enriching the event's program. The event is organized by the Municipality of Monticiano in collaboration with the Association of Palio Horse Owners and Trainers, with the participation of numerous horses entered in the heats.
The Palio dei Rioni of Monticiano is part of the rich tradition of horse racing in Tuscany, and particularly in the Siena area, where the Palio is much more than just a race: it is identity, belonging, and a popular festival. For those visiting the Sienese Maremma during this time, attending the Palio means experiencing an authentic piece of the village's culture, far from the main tourist circuits and in close contact with the Monticiano community.
The 2026 edition took place in Monticiano, in the Province of Siena, with a full program of races. 23 horses were entered in the qualifying heats, a sign of the vitality of this Palio tradition in the Sienese Maremma. The six districts — Incrociata, Borgo, Piazza, Paretaio, Sodo, and Cerbaione — competed for the drappellone on the Il Tamburo track, while the Franco Nobile Memorial rounded out the day of racing organized by the Municipality of Monticiano with the Association of Palio Horse Owners and Trainers.
A food stand is available during the day. The Lilt organization also participates in the event.
