A tradition reborn

The Palio dei Rioni is a historic tournament that brings together the municipalities of Viggiù, Saltrio, and Clivio, in Valceresio, in the province of Varese, a stone's throw from the Swiss border. Founded in 1969, the Palio marked the summer of this pre-alpine area for decades, even hosting television personalities in its early days. After nine years of interruption, a committee of volunteers has brought it back to life, restoring a deeply identity-forming event to the three communities.

Four districts competing

The challenge is played out between four districts: Stalett (Clivio), San Siro (Baraggia, a hamlet of Viggiù), San Giorgio (Saltrio), and Picasass (Viggiù). For several weeks, the districts compete in sports and various tournaments, following a tradition that in the past included football, tug-of-war, races, and themed challenges. Each district cheers for its own colours, in an atmosphere of healthy competition and great popular participation.

The spirit of the borderlands

The Palio is part of the summer calendar 'Terre di Confine' (Borderlands), which unites initiatives from Cantello, Viggiù, Saltrio, and Clivio. It is much more than a competition: it is a way to strengthen ties between neighbouring villages, involve young people, and pass on the memory of a tradition that belongs to the identity of Valceresio.
