The patronal festival of Porto Cesareo on the last weekend of June

The Our Lady of Perpetual Help Festival is the patronal feast of Porto Cesareo, a coastal town in the province of Lecce overlooking the Ionian Sea, in the heart of Salento. Every year, on the last weekend of June, the town pauses its summer beach rhythm to gather around its protector, the Blessed Virgin Mary of Perpetual Help, in a celebration that intertwines religious devotion with popular tradition.
Porto Cesareo's bond with Our Lady of Perpetual Help dates back to the 19th century. The mother church was built around 1880 next to a small 1639 chapel dedicated to Saint Cesarea, which had become too small for the village population. In 1881, during a mission by the Redemptorist Fathers promoted by Bishop Michele Mautone of the Diocese of Nardò, the new temple was placed under the title of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Perpetual Help, who has since been venerated as the city's patron saint. The icon of Perpetual Help, dear to Redemptorist spirituality, is the symbol around which the religious identity of the local community has been built.
The highlight of the festival is the solemn procession which, after the holy mass, winds through the streets of the center: from the mother church in Piazza don Lorenzo Marzio Strafella, the statue travels through the town to Piazza Nazario Sauro, overlooking the harbor. The celebrations are accompanied by a deeply felt gesture: the mayor symbolically hands over the keys of the city to Our Lady of Perpetual Help, entrusting the entire citizenry to her protection. In recent years, the religious program has also featured an evocative Sea Way of the Cross, with stations set up along the seafront.
Alongside the liturgical rites, the festival offers the classic features of Salento patronal feasts: the marching band playing through the streets from the morning, the illuminations lighting up the center, tastings of local products, and, in the evening, the traditional lyrical-symphonic concert in the square. There are also inclusive initiatives, such as a free sea excursion dedicated to people with disabilities, a sign of a community that experiences the festival as a moment of collective belonging.
Nestled between white beaches, dunes, and the Porto Cesareo Protected Marine Area, this Salento town in the Puglia region experiences its patronal festival as one of the most authentic moments of the year, when residents and vacationers meet in the same squares. The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced: as per tradition, the festival is expected to take place on the last weekend of June.
At the moment, the Blessed Virgin Mary of Perpetual Help Parish has not yet published the dates and program for the 2026 edition of the Porto Cesareo patronal festival. Based on the tradition of recent years, the event should take place on the last weekend of June, with the solemn procession, liturgical celebrations, and the civil program in the square. This page will be updated as soon as the official calendar is announced.
By car: Porto Cesareo can be reached from the SS101 Lecce-Gallipoli road, taking the exit for Nardò and Porto Cesareo. By train: the nearest stations are Nardò and Lecce, connected to the center by local bus lines. By plane: Brindisi-Salento Airport, about an hour's journey away.
The festival traditionally takes place on the last weekend of June; the dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been made official. Religious celebrations and civil events are free to attend.
The period coincides with the peak beach season: it is advisable to book accommodation in advance and reach the center on foot, as the streets used for the procession are closed to traffic.
