On May 13th in Adrano, in the province of Catania, the Our Lady of Fatima Festival is celebrated at the Church of Sant'Agostino. The date coincides with the liturgical feast of Our Lady of Fatima, which commemorates the first of the apparitions that occurred in 1917 to the three shepherd children in Portugal. In Adrano, the festival is managed by the Sant'Agostino - Santa Lucia Parish and is a highly anticipated event for the local community, who participate with great reverence.
The highlight of the day is the solemn holy mass, celebrated in the late afternoon, followed by the procession of the statue of the Madonna through the streets surrounding the church. The litter bearing the statue is carried on shoulders and accompanied by the faithful, prayers, and Marian hymns, in an atmosphere of popular devotion typical of Sicilian religious festivals. The procession winds through the neighborhood and represents the core identity of the event.
Adrano is a town with a deep religious tradition: in addition to its patron saint San Nicolò Politi, celebrated in August with the famous Volo dell'Angelo (Flight of the Angel), the local calendar includes numerous events dedicated to the Virgin under various titles. The Our Lady of Fatima Festival fits into this fabric of popular piety, which makes Adrano one of the most vibrant centers of religious life in the province of Catania and the entire Sicilian Etna region.
Adrano rises on the western slopes of Mount Etna, in a panoramic position overlooking the Simeto Valley. With ancient origins—it was founded as Adranon by Dionysius the Elder around 400 BC—the city preserves a Norman castle and a charming historic center. Participating in the May 13th festival is also an opportunity to discover this village on the Etna side and its traditions.
