The evening race in Castellazzo Bormida that welcomes the arrival of summer
The Notturna Castellazzese is one of the most cherished evening races in the Piedmontese running calendar. It takes place in Castellazzo Bormida, a town in the Province of Alessandria, in Lower Piedmont, and reached its thirty-third edition in 2026. The event is organized by A.S.D. Verdenero Castellazzo Bormida, a local club deeply rooted in the area that has been driving local sports life for decades.
The date is no coincidence: the Notturna is held on the Friday before the end of the school year, which is why it carries the subtitle "Run Towards the Holidays." It is the evening when the town welcomes the coming summer, with families lining the streets and children taking center stage in their own dedicated race. More than just a competition, it is a community moment: the competitive spirit coexists with a popular and convivial atmosphere, and for many locals, it is a ritual that marks the annual calendar.
The program always features two distinct events. It kicks off with the youth race, covering a shorter 1.5 km route reserved for the youngest runners. This is followed by the main competitive race, a 6.5 km course winding through the town's streets, which serves as a qualifying event for the FIDAL Alessandria Provincial Road Running Championship. The start and finish lines are located at the Piazzale 1° Maggio Multipurpose Center, the logistical hub of the event.
Over the years, the Notturna Castellazzese has built a strong reputation, attracting athletes from across the Province of Alessandria and neighboring areas, with the participation of the region's leading running clubs. The evening climate, the festive town atmosphere, and its inclusion in the provincial circuit make it a highly anticipated stop for road runners in Piedmont. Participants are welcomed not only by a well-organized race but also by amenities for runners, including post-race showers.
Castellazzo Bormida is located just a few kilometers from Alessandria and can be reached by car via the provincial road connecting Alessandria to Acqui Terme. The nearest train station is in Alessandria, from where you can continue by car or bus. During the race, traffic restrictions may be in place on the streets involved in the route; it is advisable to check for alternative routes provided by the organizers.
Registration is available in advance through the organizing club, and it is usually possible to register on-site as well, starting when the meeting point opens in the late afternoon. The youth race is dedicated to children.
