About Notte Sacra

Every October, Torre del Greco comes alive for the Notte Sacra, an event that blends faith, music, and art in honor of San Vincenzo Romano, the saintly parish priest canonized in 2018. For several days, churches, museums, and squares in the historic center remain open late into the evening, hosting sacred music concerts, coral and sacred art exhibitions, street artists (madonnari), guided tours, and moments of prayer. This free, widespread event involves the schools, parishes, artisans, and associations of this Vesuvian city.

Notte Sacra: when the city becomes a single journey

The Notte Sacra is an annual event held in October that transforms the historic center of Torre del Greco, in the Metropolitan City of Naples, into a grand path of faith, music, and culture. Established in 2018 to celebrate the canonization of San Vincenzo Romano, the festival has grown into one of the defining events of the Vesuvian coast. For several days, churches, museums, workshops, and squares stay open until late, and the city rediscovers its sense of community.

The heart of the event is the Basilica of Santa Croce, the mother church of Torre del Greco and the place where the saint carried out his ministry. However, the program is intentionally spread throughout the city: it crosses the central parishes, reaches local exhibition spaces, and concludes with a solemn liturgy and an urban pilgrimage retracing the symbolic sites of San Vincenzo Romano's life.

San Vincenzo Romano, the saintly parish priest of Torre del Greco

Vincenzo Romano (1751-1831) served as parish priest of Santa Croce during extremely difficult years for the city, marked by the 1794 eruption of Mount Vesuvius that devastated Torre del Greco. Popular memory remembers him as lu prevete faticatore, the working priest, for the dedication with which he devoted himself to the material and spiritual reconstruction of the community. Proclaimed a saint on October 14, 2018, he is the first parish priest of the Italian secular clergy to be elevated to sainthood, and the Notte Sacra was born as a local thanksgiving for that event.

A program that weaves the sacred with the popular

The Notte Sacra calendar features a variety of events, which in recent editions have included:

  • sacred music concerts in the churches of the center, with series such as InCanto Sacro and organ recitals;
  • La Notte delle Radici, a festival of Southern rhythms and sounds in Piazza Santa Croce, featuring folk orchestras and guests from the Neapolitan scene;
  • exhibitions of sacred art, nativity scenes, coral, and cameosโ€”the crafts that have identified Torre del Greco to the world for centuries;
  • performances by madonnari (street painters), who create chalk drawings on the asphalt of the city streets;
  • guided tours of the city's churches, museums, and historic sites, with special evening openings;
  • roving performances, showcases for young talent, and moments of prayer open to all.

Schools and youth as protagonists

One of the most recognizable aspects of the Notte Sacra is the massive involvement of the school system. In recent editions, approximately 1,400 students have participated: nine hundred primary school children, who walk from the Basilica of Santa Croce to the saint's home along the same path he traveled two centuries ago, and five hundred middle and high school students engaged in workshops, thematic tours, and competitions for young artists. An illustrated volume dedicated to the figure of San Vincenzo Romano is distributed to the students.

Must-see locations

The Basilica of Santa Croce is the natural starting point, housing the saint's relics and serving as the site for the solemn closing procession. From there, the route expands to the home of San Vincenzo Romano, the central parishes, and the exhibition spaces hosting the artistic craft displays. Those visiting Torre del Greco during these days can combine the event with discovering the coral tradition, the seafront, and the slopes of Mount Vesuvius, all just minutes from the city center.

An event of the Vesuvian Campania

Promoted by the Notte Sacra Committee together with the Basilica of Santa Croce and supported by the Municipality of Torre del Greco, the Archdiocese of Naples, and the Regione Campania, the event has always maintained its free admission policy. It is a precious opportunity for those who wish to experience a still-vibrant popular devotion, far from mass tourism circuits, in a city that unites volcanoes, the sea, and artistic crafts.

Notte Sacra โ€” edition 2026

The new edition of the Notte Sacra is expected in Torre del Greco in autumn 2026, continuing a tradition that has linked the city to the memory of San Vincenzo Romano and the anniversary of his canonization (October 14, 2018) since 2018. As of today, the organizing committee and the Basilica of Santa Croce have not yet released official dates or a program. Information will be updated as soon as it is published by the official event channels.

The event has taken place regularly in October since 2018, and based on previous editions, it is reasonable to expect it to be held in the first half of the month, around the anniversary of San Vincenzo Romano's canonization.

Those wishing to plan a visit can follow the social media channels of the Notte Sacra Committee and the announcements from the Basilica of Santa Croce and the Municipality of Torre del Greco, which present the program at the beginning of October each year.
