Music, art, and prayer in honor of San Vincenzo Romano in Torre del Greco

The Notte Sacra is an annual event held in October that transforms the historic center of Torre del Greco, in the Metropolitan City of Naples, into a grand path of faith, music, and culture. Established in 2018 to celebrate the canonization of San Vincenzo Romano, the festival has grown into one of the defining events of the Vesuvian coast. For several days, churches, museums, workshops, and squares stay open until late, and the city rediscovers its sense of community.
The heart of the event is the Basilica of Santa Croce, the mother church of Torre del Greco and the place where the saint carried out his ministry. However, the program is intentionally spread throughout the city: it crosses the central parishes, reaches local exhibition spaces, and concludes with a solemn liturgy and an urban pilgrimage retracing the symbolic sites of San Vincenzo Romano's life.
Vincenzo Romano (1751-1831) served as parish priest of Santa Croce during extremely difficult years for the city, marked by the 1794 eruption of Mount Vesuvius that devastated Torre del Greco. Popular memory remembers him as lu prevete faticatore, the working priest, for the dedication with which he devoted himself to the material and spiritual reconstruction of the community. Proclaimed a saint on October 14, 2018, he is the first parish priest of the Italian secular clergy to be elevated to sainthood, and the Notte Sacra was born as a local thanksgiving for that event.
The Notte Sacra calendar features a variety of events, which in recent editions have included:
One of the most recognizable aspects of the Notte Sacra is the massive involvement of the school system. In recent editions, approximately 1,400 students have participated: nine hundred primary school children, who walk from the Basilica of Santa Croce to the saint's home along the same path he traveled two centuries ago, and five hundred middle and high school students engaged in workshops, thematic tours, and competitions for young artists. An illustrated volume dedicated to the figure of San Vincenzo Romano is distributed to the students.
The Basilica of Santa Croce is the natural starting point, housing the saint's relics and serving as the site for the solemn closing procession. From there, the route expands to the home of San Vincenzo Romano, the central parishes, and the exhibition spaces hosting the artistic craft displays. Those visiting Torre del Greco during these days can combine the event with discovering the coral tradition, the seafront, and the slopes of Mount Vesuvius, all just minutes from the city center.
Promoted by the Notte Sacra Committee together with the Basilica of Santa Croce and supported by the Municipality of Torre del Greco, the Archdiocese of Naples, and the Regione Campania, the event has always maintained its free admission policy. It is a precious opportunity for those who wish to experience a still-vibrant popular devotion, far from mass tourism circuits, in a city that unites volcanoes, the sea, and artistic crafts.
For the 2026 edition of the Notte Sacra in Torre del Greco, no official dates or program have been announced yet. The event has taken place regularly in October since 2018, and based on previous editions, it is reasonable to expect it to be held in the first half of the month, around the anniversary of San Vincenzo Romano's canonization.
Those wishing to plan a visit can follow the social media channels of the Notte Sacra Committee and the announcements from the Basilica of Santa Croce and the Municipality of Torre del Greco, which present the program at the beginning of October each year. This page will be updated as soon as the dates are confirmed.
By train: the Circumvesuviana station (Naples-Sorrento line) in Torre del Greco is a short distance from the historic center; the FS train station of Torre del Greco on the Naples-Salerno line is also convenient. By car: take the Torre del Greco exit on the A3 Naples-Salerno motorway, then follow signs for the center. By plane: Naples-Capodichino airport, about 20 km away.
Events are concentrated in the Basilica of Santa Croce and the streets and squares of the historic center, with evening openings of churches, museums, and exhibition spaces.
In previous editions, access to concerts, exhibitions, and visits has been free of charge. Some guided tours may require reservations.
The center is pedestrianized during evening events: it is best to leave your car in peripheral parking lots. Wear comfortable shoes for walking and bring a light jacket for the October evenings.
