Two months of noir and crime fiction in Varese
Nord in Giallo is the festival that makes Varese a capital of noir and crime fiction every spring. Now in its fifth edition, it stands out for its widespread format and unusually long duration: almost two months of events, from late April to late June, spread across the Sala Montanari, city bookstores, and the multiscreen cinema.
The heart of the festival is the meetings with nationally renowned authors of the giallo and noir genre. Recent editions have featured leading names in Italian noir, such as Massimo Carlotto, Sandrone Dazieri, Giovanni Grasso, Cristina Rava, and Orso Tosco, winner of the Premio Scerbanenco. The meetings are accompanied by bookstore presentations, film events, and convivial moments.
Nord in Giallo is not limited to the written page: the program includes forays into cinema, theatre, and music, with screenings and shows related to the giallo imaginary. The event thus intertwines literature with other arts, broadening its audience beyond just readers.
Promoted in the Municipality of Varese, the capital of the Lombard province overlooking the Prealps, the festival is supported by the municipal administration and has established itself as one of the most anticipated cultural events of the Varese spring. Most of the events are free admission.
The 2026 edition, the fifth, confirms the festival's widespread format: meetings with Italian giallo authors in city bookstores and at Sala Montanari, film events at the multiscreen cinema, and forays into theatre and music. Among the authors announced for recent editions are leading names in Italian noir such as Massimo Carlotto, Sandrone Dazieri, Giovanni Grasso, Cristina Rava, and Orso Tosco.
The festival spans almost two months, from late April to late June, with events distributed throughout the calendar. The structure includes:
