The walk through the woods and peaks of the Piacenza Apennines in Cattaragna di Ferriere
The Non-competitive walk La Terrazza della Val d'Aveto - Giancarlo Briggi Memorial is the event that every year, on the last Sunday of June, enlivens Cattaragna, a tiny hamlet in the Municipality of Ferriere, in the Province of Piacenza (Emilia-Romagna). Nestled in the upper Val d'Aveto, on the edge of the Aveto Regional Park and the Ligurian-Emilian Apennines, this mountain village transforms for a day into the starting point of a great walking festival, capable of attracting walking enthusiasts and families from all over the Piacenza area and neighboring valleys.
The walk is a non-competitive, free-pace walk, certified by the F.I.A.S.P. Territorial Committee of Piacenza (Piacenza Marce) and organized by the Circolo A.N.S.P.I. Amici di Cattaragna in collaboration with the Municipality of Ferriere. It is not a race: there are no stopwatches or rankings, but the pleasure of moving in nature at your own pace. For this very reason, the event is designed for all fitness levels, from children to the most experienced hikers, with a choice of routes ranging from a short walk of a few hundred meters in elevation difference to a challenging loop that touches three Apennine peaks.
The event is dedicated to the memory of Giancarlo Briggi, a friend and organizer of many village initiatives, who passed away shortly before the walk was established. The "Memorial" that bears his name is the common thread of an event born from the grassroots, from the will of a small mountain community to enhance its territory and the trails that cross it.
The routes are entirely developed on the trails surrounding Cattaragna, amidst beech forests, pastures, and panoramic ridges. The longer routes reach Monte Carevolo (1552 m), Cantone (1507 m), and Monte Crociglia (1578 m), from which the view embraces the Nure and Aveto valleys. Refreshment points are set up along the routes, and the organization guarantees medical assistance; at the finish line, there are food stands with traditional mountain dishes from the Piacenza Apennines.
Visiting Cattaragna for the walk is also a way to discover one of the most authentic corners of the Emilian Apennines: stone villages, beech woods, wildlife, and a network of trails connecting the Piacenza area to Liguria. The day thus becomes both a sporting occasion and a village festival, where you can walk, eat, and be together in the heart of the mountains.
The 11th edition of the walk La Terrazza della Val d'Aveto - Giancarlo Briggi Memorial is scheduled for Sunday, June 28, 2026, in Cattaragna di Ferriere, in Val d'Aveto. The event, certified by the F.I.A.S.P. Territorial Committee of Piacenza, confirms the formula of the non-competitive, free-pace walk, organized by the Circolo A.N.S.P.I. Amici di Cattaragna with the Municipality of Ferriere.
