Historical re-enactment of the Roman navigation ritual at Villa Ferretti
Navigium Isidis is a historical re-enactment dedicated to one of ancient Rome's most evocative rituals: the ceremony that celebrated the reopening of maritime routes every spring after the winter season. The rite was consecrated to Isis Pelagia, the goddess protector of sailors and the sea, whose Egyptian cult spread widely throughout the Roman Mediterranean. The event takes place at Villa Ferretti, in the town of Bacoli, in the Metropolitan City of Naples, in the heart of the Phlegraean Fields, a territory in Campania rich in classical-era heritage.
Promoted by the Militum Schola APS association, the event transforms the park of Villa Ferretti into a living Roman encampment. The public can explore a series of educational stations that recount the daily life of Imperial Rome: legionary training, gladiatorial combat, diet, writing, pottery making, and navigation techniques. These are complemented by legion maneuvers, gladiator duels, and historical dances, leading up to the climax: the Navigium Isidis ritual, featuring a procession and the symbolic consecration of a votive ship.
The re-enactment has deep ties to the local area: the Classis Misenensis, the main Roman imperial fleet, was based right here in the Phlegraean Fields, at Misenum. This fleet is also linked to the figure of Pliny the Elder, who set sail from Misenum in 79 AD to assist populations affected by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, in what is considered one of history's first documented civil protection operations. The event thus becomes an opportunity to rediscover the maritime and archaeological identity of Bacoli and the entire Phlegraean area.
Navigium Isidis is designed for families, schools, ancient history enthusiasts, and tourists visiting the Phlegraean Fields. The activities, curated by specialized re-enactment groups from various Italian regions, combine philological rigor with entertainment, offering an immersive and educational experience. The initiative is held under the patronage of the Municipalities of Bacoli and Monte di Procida, the University of Naples Federico II, and with the support of the Phlegraean Fields Archaeological Park.
The second edition of Navigium Isidis brought the park of Villa Ferretti in Bacoli to life with a morning dedicated to the re-enactment of the Roman navigation ritual. The event, promoted by Militum Schola APS, offered a journey through the daily life of ancient Rome and the grand final ritual in honor of Isis Pelagia, involving numerous historical re-enactment groups.
Several specialized historical groups from various Italian regions participated in the re-enactment, with insights dedicated to the Classis Misenensis, the imperial fleet of Misenum.
