The art of the Neapolitan nativity scene at the Church of Corpus Domini in Gragnano
In the heart of Gragnano, in the province of Naples, the Church of Corpus Domini in Piazza Aubry transforms every year between December and January into the setting for the Nativity Art Exhibition. Now in its fourth edition, the event has become one of the most anticipated Christmas traditions in Gragnano, attracting visitors from across the Stabia area and the Sorrento Peninsula.
The exhibition pays tribute to the timeless charm of the Neapolitan nativity scene, one of the most deeply rooted artistic expressions in the Campania region. A universal symbol of faith, art, and craftsmanship, the nativity scene blends religious devotion with extraordinary scenic detail: landscapes, workshops, characters, and scenes of daily life are reconstructed with a realism rooted in the great 18th-century Neapolitan school.
Each edition brings together about fifty master nativity artists, both local and national, who display their work in a suggestive path set up among the church aisles. Alongside elaborate scenery, one finds figures of extraordinary realism, the minute details of workshops, and the atmospheres that recount the birth of Christ according to the popular sensibility of the region.
Promoted with the patronage of the Gragnano municipal administration and curated by a group of nativity enthusiasts, the Nativity Art Exhibition is part of the city's wider Christmas program, which includes initiatives by local parishes and public spaces. The City of Macaroni, world-famous for its pasta, thus reveals its most intimate and traditional side, deeply connected to faith and the art of the nativity scene.
For those spending the holidays in Campania—between Naples, Pompeii, and the Sorrento Peninsula—the exhibition is an opportunity to immerse oneself in the authentic atmosphere of a Southern Christmas, away from the more crowded tourist destinations. It is a path suitable for families and anyone wishing to rediscover the cultural and spiritual value of a tradition passed down from generation to generation.
For its fourth edition, the Nativity Art Exhibition returned to animate the Church of Corpus Domini in Piazza Aubry, Gragnano, from December 7, 2025, to January 10, 2026. The inauguration took place on Sunday, December 7, at 10:30 AM, during the Eucharistic celebration.
The exhibition showcased works by about fifty master nativity artists from the local area and other regions, in a path that highlighted intricate scenery and highly realistic figures.
