The student theater festival that has been bringing Bagni di Lucca to life for over thirty years
The National School Theater Festival is the pride of Bagni di Lucca, in the province of Lucca, in the heart of Tuscany. Established in 1993, for over thirty years it has showcased the talent and creativity of Italian students of all agesโfrom kindergarten to high schoolโon the stage of the Teatro Accademico. It is considered one of the most established and deeply rooted educational theater events on the national scene.
More than just a series of performances, this initiative is a major pedagogical project. Alongside the school troupes' productions, the program includes workshops, theater residencies, and professional development courses for teachers and practitioners, ensuring theater becomes an integral part of the educational journey. The core philosophy is that stepping onto a stage teaches young people how to collaborate, overcome shyness, give voice to their emotions, and view the world through a new lens.
While deeply connected to the Serchio Valley and the Lucca area, the Festival has a national reach: every year, student delegations from across Italy arrive in Bagni di Lucca, staying in the town for the duration of their participation and enjoying an experience of exchange and friendship. Schools from Tuscany and other regions take turns on stage over several weeks, creating a packed calendar of events.
A hallmark of the event is that it is free of charge: all performances and training sessions are open to the public without tickets, reflecting the project's social and educational mission. In addition to the Teatro Accademico, some activities take place in the Sala Rosa of the Circolo dei Forestieri and within participating schools.
The Festival is organized by the Associazione Il Circo e la Luna ASD-APS, with the support of the Municipality of Bagni di Lucca, the local Comprehensive Institute, and the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Lucca. The artistic direction is led by Michela Innocenti. The closing ceremony includes commendations and awards that guide the most deserving troupes toward the national network of theater festivals.
A spa town famous since the 19th century and once frequented by poets and nobles from across Europe, Bagni di Lucca provides an elegant and intimate backdrop for the Festival. The Teatro Accademico, an architectural jewel in the town center, and the tranquil atmosphere make this experience even more special for the participating students.
The 2026 edition of the National School Theater Festival chose the theme of Peace as its guiding thread, understood as an educational, social, and cultural value. The event took place from May 15 to 30, with the closing ceremony on June 7, 2026, offering nearly fifty events including performances, workshops, and training meetings for teachers, all free of charge.
