About Palio of Barrels
When Sport Meets Wine
The National Palio of Barrels of the Wine Cities is a traveling competition that, from April to October, crosses the wine-producing municipalities of Italy belonging to the National Association of Wine Cities. In Vittorio Veneto, in the province of Treviso, the race arrives in the charming medieval village of Serravalle, where teams compete by pushing barrels along a route starting from Piazza Vecellio.
Race Rules
Each team consists of five people—three men and two women—who compete in several trials. Pushing the 500-liter barrel is the main discipline, with specific rules for uphill, flat, and downhill sections. Alongside this are the women's race on lighter barrels, the transport relay, and the filling trial, where the entire team collaborates to fill a barrel with water.
A Festival for the Whole City
Winning local races grants the right to participate in the national final, where the strongest Wine Cities compete for the Palio. The event, organized by the Pro Loco Vittorio Veneto, is much more than a competition: it's an opportunity to promote typical products, wineries, and the identity of a territory that proudly boasts its wine heritage, animating the center of Serravalle with stands, crowds, and a festive atmosphere.
Palio of Barrels — edition 2026
On Saturday, September 12, 2026, Vittorio Veneto hosts the 21st edition of the National Palio of Barrels of the Wine Cities. The races animate the streets of the village of Serravalle, starting from Piazza Vecellio.
Scheduled Trials
- Pushing the 500-liter barrel — the main trial, along a route with uphill, flat, and downhill sections.
- Women's race — 100-200 meter sprint with 250-liter barrels.
- Transport relay — 250-liter barrels transported between two points.
- Barrel filling — team members fill a 225-liter barrel with water.
The event is organized by Pro Loco Vittorio Veneto in collaboration with the National Association of Wine Cities.

How to Get Here
Vittorio Veneto is reachable by car from the A27 motorway (Vittorio Veneto Nord exit) and by train with a stop at the city station. The races take place in the historic center of Serravalle, north of the city.
