A living nativity scene in the medieval village of Ronciglione
In the heart of the Viterbo Tuscia region, the town of Ronciglione (Province of Viterbo, Lazio) hosts one of the most evocative Christmas pageants in the area every year: The "Natalis in Vico" Living Nativity. Since Christmas 2015, the medieval backdrop of the old town has provided the setting for an event that blends faith, historical re-enactment, and the promotion of local heritage, involving generations of volunteers and residents.
The route begins at the Castello della Rovere, the ancient fortress known to locals as "i Torrioni," and winds through the tuff-stone alleys of the village to the small garden of the Borgo di Sopra. Walking amidst soft lighting and an atmosphere of yesteryear, visitors encounter ladies, knights, merchants, and performers in period costumes, fully immersed in a setting that evokes the daily life of a medieval village.
The heart of the event is the faithful reconstruction of ancient crafts: washerwomen, blacksmiths, stonemasons, shepherds, and bakers bring the workshops along the route to life, while a small open-air market comes alive in the area of the ancient Church of Sant'Andrea. The journey culminates in the Nativity scene, housed in a corner rich in history and charm. Among the most precious elements of recent editions are the lead coins hand-minted by members of the Historica Association, using original artisanal techniques.
Along the route, medieval taverns and refreshment points welcome visitors with free tastings of typical local products, allowing them to savor the scents and tastes of the past. Period music completes an immersive experience designed for the whole family, from children to history enthusiasts.
Organized by the Historica Tourist and Cultural Association with the patronage of the Ronciglione municipal administration, the "Natalis in Vico" Living Nativity has become an essential Christmas landmark in the Tuscia region over the years. The combination of the charm of the medieval village, community participation, and the philological care of the setting makes it one of the most beloved stops on the Christmas calendar of northern Lazio.
The ninth edition of the "Natalis in Vico" Living Nativity took place in Ronciglione over two days, December 28, 2025, and January 6, 2026, amidst history, emotion, and ancient crafts. The route, opening at 4:30 PM, led visitors from the Castello della Rovere to the Borgo di Sopra, through tuff-stone alleys, artisan workshops, and the Nativity scene.
