Over forty events including nativity scenes, markets, music, and an ice rink in the heart of the Vallo di Diano
From the beginning of December until Epiphany, the Municipality of Sala Consilina, in the Province of Salerno, transforms its historic center into a grand Christmas stage. Natale Salese is not just a single event but a widespread program: over forty appointments spread across alleys, squares, churches, and civic halls, with almost one initiative every day. The 2025/2026 edition took place from December 1st, 2025, to January 11th, 2026, combining popular tradition, spirituality, music, sports, food and wine, and entertainment for both adults and children.
The symbolic heart of the event is the 16-square-meter artistic nativity scene in the 18th-century Neapolitan style, set up in the Grancia di San Lorenzo with entrance from Via Cesare Battisti. Inaugurated on December 8th with a blessing by the parish priest Father Domenico Santangelo, it remained open to visitors daily until January 6th, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. It is a classic Neapolitan nativity scene featuring terracotta shepherds, workshops, taverns, and scenes of popular life: a tradition that is true art in Campania.
The most popular attraction for families is the ice skating rink in Piazzetta Pappafico, managed by the Tertium Millennium cooperative: in the previous edition, it had already exceeded five thousand visitors, with people arriving from all over the Vallo di Diano, prompting the administration to extend its opening. Next to the rink, you can find Santa's house, featuring hot chocolate, souvenir photos, and creative workshops dedicated to children aged 3 to 6, as well as a food area managed by the same cooperative.
The musical program spans various genres and locations: from the spread of Christmas carols in the streets of the historic center to concerts in churches and at the Teatro Mario Scarpetta, which on December 6th, 2025, hosted the Christmas Concert of the Wind Orchestra of the National Police Association โ Bari Section, conducted by Maestro Giuseppe Pellegrini, with a repertoire that blended film music, opera, Neapolitan tradition, and Christmas carols. The spirit of solidarity is also strong: on December 19th, the Palasport Giuseppe Zingaro hosted the Charity Living Tombola, with ninety children aged 5 to 10 acting out the numbers of the tombola, promoted by the Arte e Mestieri Association together with the Youth Forum and other local entities.
The Christmas lights are not confined to the main street: in recent years, the lighting has been extended to peripheral districts such as Trinitร and Sant'Antonio, to ensure the whole community experiences the festival. Alongside the craft and local product markets, there are traditional bonfires, exhibitions, theatrical shows, dance performances, and sports initiatives. Mayor Domenico Cartolano has repeatedly emphasized how the program is also a tool to support the social and economic fabric of the town center.
Sala Consilina is one of the most populous centers in the Vallo di Diano, the wide plain of southern Campania enclosed between the Maddalena mountains and the Cilento massif. Its ancient village, perched on the slope with alleys, stairways, and stone arches, is the natural setting for Natale Salese: walking through it in the evening, amidst lights, music, and the scent of traditional sweets, is the best way to understand why Christmas is felt here as the moment when the community comes together. Its location, a few kilometers from the motorway exit and the Certosa di San Lorenzo in Padula, makes visiting easy even for those arriving from Salerno, Basilicata, or the rest of Campania.
The calendar was presented in the Council Chamber of the Municipality of Sala Consilina at the beginning of December 2025 and covered six weeks of celebration. Mayor Domenico Cartolano defined it as the moment when "a community comes together, recognizes itself, and walks together," claiming the teamwork between the administration and associations.
Among the most popular moments: the Christmas Concert on December 6th at the Teatro Mario Scarpetta, the inauguration on December 8th of the 16 sqm nativity scene in the 18th-century Neapolitan style at the Grancia di San Lorenzo, the Charity Living Tombola on December 19th at the Palasport Giuseppe Zingaro, and the living nativity scene on January 3rd in the historic center. The ice skating rink, inaugurated on December 6th in Piazzetta Pappafico and managed by the Tertium Millennium cooperative, confirmed the success of the previous year, exceeding five thousand visitors. The lights were also extended to the Trinitร and Sant'Antonio districts.
By car: A2 del Mediterraneo motorway, exit Sala Consilina; the historic center can be reached in a few minutes. By train: the reference stations are Sicignano degli Alburni and Salerno, with onward travel by bus. By bus: daily connections with Salerno, Naples, and Potenza.
The events are distributed throughout the historic center of Sala Consilina: Piazzetta Pappafico (ice rink), Grancia di San Lorenzo with entrance from Via Cesare Battisti (artistic nativity scene), Teatro Mario Scarpetta, Palasport Giuseppe Zingaro, and the churches and squares of the village.
Almost all events are free to enter. The ice skating rink (turn-based fee, including skate rental) and some charity initiatives, such as the Living Tombola with a participation fee of 10 euros per child, require payment.
Evenings in the Vallo di Diano are cold: warm clothing is recommended. The historic center is visited on foot, with stairs and slopes: comfortable shoes are best. The updated calendar is published on the official channels of the Municipality of Sala Consilina.
