The Muttertagskonzert of the Musikkapelle Prags

The Muttertagskonzert der Musikkapelle Prags is the annual concert that the Braies (Prags in German) brass band dedicates to Mother's Day. It is held at the Haus der Vereine (Association House) in the village of Ferrara/Schmieden, in the heart of Innerprags, a small municipality in the Puster Valley, in the province of Bolzano, Trentino-Alto Adige.

A mountain band tradition

In South Tyrol, and particularly in the German-speaking villages of the Puster Valley, the Musikkapelle (brass band) is a pillar of community and cultural life. The band accompanies the main religious and civil celebrations of the village: processions, patronal feasts, the autumn Kirchtag, and, of course, the Mother's Day concert. The Musikkapelle Prags is part of the Verband Südtiroler Musikkapellen (VSM), the federation of South Tyrolean bands, and is composed of local musicians of all ages, many of whom grew up in the local music school.

The evening

The concert takes place in the evening, usually around the second Sunday of May, and admission is free. The program alternates between the great classics of the Alpine brass repertoire—marches, polkas, and waltzes of the Austro-Tyrolean tradition—and more recent pieces and soundtracks, in a warm and familiar atmosphere that involves the entire upper valley community. The direction is entrusted to the band's Kapellmeister, while the organization is handled by the musicians themselves.

Braies, among the Dolomites

The municipality of Braies/Prags is world-famous for its Pragser Wildsee (Lake Braies), one of the jewels of the Dolomites. Beyond its tourist fame, Braies remains an authentic mountain village where folk traditions and brass music continue to mark the rhythm of the seasons. Attending the Muttertagskonzert means discovering the most intimate and communal side of this corner of Trentino-Alto Adige.
