Musica in Quota — Lake Kastel Concert

A concert where the trail ends

The Lake Kastel Concert is one of the most evocative stops of Musica in Quota, a festival that has been bringing live music to the Piedmontese Alps for nearly twenty years. It takes place in the municipality of Formazza, in the upper Formazza Valley, at the northernmost tip of the Verbano-Cusio-Ossola province in Piedmont. The stage is entirely natural, located at an altitude of 2,224 meters on the shores of Lake Kastel, a body of water nestled between the peaks: to get there, a ticket isn't enough—you need to lace up your boots and hike.

Hiking and music, an inseparable duo

The formula of Musica in Quota is simple and fascinating: every concert is preceded by a hike that leads the audience to the performance site. The meeting point is Riale, the highest hamlet in Formazza; from there, you reach Alpe Toggia and continue along a marked trail to the lake. The elevation gain is approximately 490 meters, involving a one-hour and forty-five-minute walk on a trail classified as 'E' (hiking difficulty). A guide accompanies the participants, who hike independently but with assistance at the start and finish.

The festival's philosophy

Founded in 2007 and led by the Musica in Quota Association under the presidency of Claudio Cottini, the festival has made the cross-pollination of nature and culture its hallmark. The idea is to bring "the magic of notes to the summit," offering hikers the reward of a concert in a unique alpine setting. All events are free and begin around 11:30 AM, when the fatigue of the climb gives way to the pleasure of listening.

Formazza and the Antigorio-Formazza Valley

Formazza is a town with an ancient Walser culture, populated centuries ago by German-speaking settlers who left a unique mark on the architecture, toponyms, and traditions of the valley. The Riale basin, with its pastures, stone and wood huts, and proximity to the famous Toce Waterfall, provides the backdrop for this stage of the festival. Lake Kastel represents the highest point of the entire series: the high-altitude environment, silent and severe, amplifies the emotion of the performance.

An experience to be lived with awareness

As this is a high-mountain hike, the success of the event depends on weather conditions: in case of bad weather, both the hike and the concert will be cancelled. It is recommended to bring appropriate clothing, trekking boots, and a packed lunch, or to take advantage of the catering services provided by the Sci Club Formazza.
