The widespread festival bringing music to the historic center of Bitonto
Every year, for the International Music Festival on June 21st, the city of Bitonto, located in the province of Bari in the heart of Puglia, lights up with sounds, colors, and words. The event, promoted by the Municipality of Bitonto in collaboration with the Asteria Space association, is not confined to a single location but spreads across the squares, courtyards, and alleys of the old town, creating a true open-air festival. The highlight is the widespread event «A Street for Art», which coincides with the founding anniversary of Asteria Space, established on June 21, 2019.
The program embraces diverse genres and traditions, offering the audience a journey through centuries and musical cultures. It spans from classical and symphonic music to reinterpretations of Italian songs, from pizzica and traditional Southern Italian folk music to singer-songwriter performances, and even fusions of Mediterranean roots and contemporary electronica. Alongside the concerts, there are art exhibitions, book presentations, and performances, making the festival a multidisciplinary event that speaks to a broad and diverse audience.
The main stage is set up near Piazza Aldo Moro, in front of the Asteria Space headquarters, while the historic center of Bitonto hosts numerous stations: from Palazzo Rogadeo to Porta Baresana, from Piazza Cattedrale to Largo Teatro, and on to Piazza Cavour and the Church of the Purgatory. The festival also reaches the districts of Palombaio and Mariotto, which host concerts dedicated to orchestral music and Puglian folk traditions. This choice to spread events throughout the municipal territory is a hallmark of the festival, designed to animate the entire community.
«A Street for Art» stems from the experience of Asteria Space, a Bitonto-based cultural entity founded by young entrepreneurs through a regional grant. Over time, it has developed artistic residency projects and initiatives to enhance local heritage, such as the project linked to the Monti Dauni. Each year, the festival's artistic direction curates a lineup that aims to unite local artists, young talents, and experimental proposals, with the goal of transforming the Music Festival into an opportunity for encounter between citizens, visitors, and different artistic languages.
The 2026 edition took place over three evenings. On June 19, in Mariotto (Piazza Roma), the Symphony Orchestra of the Metropolitan City of Bari presented «Sanremotop – The Winner Is», an orchestral reinterpretation of famous songs from the Sanremo Festival. On June 20, in Palombaio (Piazza Milite Ignoto), the group Folkemigra performed «Pizziche e Tarantè», while the concert «From the Renaissance to Piazzolla» was held in the courtyard of Palazzo Sylos-Calò in Bitonto.
On June 21, the heart of the event was the stage set up near Piazza Aldo Moro, in front of the Asteria Space headquarters, to celebrate its seventh anniversary. The evening opened with a piano performance by Gaetano De Giosa, the presentation of the novel «Speranza» by Irene Gianeselli, and the inauguration of the exhibition by artist-in-residence Sylvia Schorn, concluding with the live set «Resonant Ritual» by Gianni Masci. From 8:00 PM, the historic center came alive with numerous stations, including Palazzo Rogadeo, Largo Teatro, Porta Baresana, Piazza Cattedrale, Piazza Cavour, and the Church of the Purgatory.
Bitonto is located just a few kilometers from Bari, in Puglia. By car, it can be reached via the SS96 and SS98; Bari-Palese airport is about 15 km away. The city is connected to Bari by the Ferrovie del Nord Barese (Ferrotramviaria) lines.
All events of the Music Festival and «A Street for Art» are free to attend. Concerts mainly take place in the evening, from 7:00 PM until late, in the squares of the historic center and the districts.
Given the widespread nature of the event, it is advisable to check the program in advance to plan your movement between the different locations. We recommend comfortable clothing and shoes suitable for walking through the alleys of the old town.
