The widespread jazz festival of the Peligna Valley in its hometown, Introdacqua
Muntagninjazz is one of the most original jazz festivals in Abruzzo: a widespread and itinerant event that brings great live music every summer to the squares, woods, and mountain huts of the Peligna Valley, in the province of L'Aquila. Founded in 2007 and organized by the Muntagninjazz APS association, the festival involves a dozen municipalities and dozens of different locations, transforming villages, natural theaters, springs, and mountain trails into open-air stages.
The Municipality of Introdacqua, a small town nestled at the foot of Monte Plaja along the Peligna Valley, is the birthplace of the festival: the historical headquarters of the event are located here, and it is from here that the musical journey crossing the territory begins every summer. It is in Introdacqua, at the Bosco Plaja, that the inaugural concert is traditionally held, an event that shines a light on the entire widespread program.
The Bosco Plaja, a green area equipped above the village, is the beating heart of the Introdacqua leg. Here, the audience can dine outdoors amidst music, dancing, and active participation, in a convivial atmosphere that has become the hallmark of the Muntagninjazz opening. The inaugural evening is usually entrusted to a street band or a marching band capable of engaging the audience, setting the festive tone for the entire month of concerts that will follow in the villages of the Peligna Valley, the Alto Sangro, and the Sagittario Valley.
Muntagninjazz is not just a series of concerts: it is a cultural project that enhances the territory of the Peligna Valley and the Abruzzo mountains. Alongside evenings in village squares and major concerts in Sulmona, the festival offers concert-hikes that accompany the public to the most beautiful places in the district, between the Majella National Park and the surrounding nature reserves. The formula has made Muntagninjazz a recognized model of a widespread festival, capable of weaving together music, art, environment, and sustainable tourism throughout the province of L'Aquila.
Attending a leg of Muntagninjazz also means discovering Introdacqua, one of the most evocative villages in inland Abruzzo within the Peligna Valley, with its historic center, the Madonna della Neve sanctuary, and the surrounding mountains. The deep bond between the village and the event—of which Introdacqua is the cradle—makes the Introdacqua evening an identity-defining moment for the entire festival, in the heart of the Abruzzo Region.
For its 20th anniversary (20th edition), Muntagninjazz returns from July 23 to August 22, 2026 with a program that weaves together jazz, singer-songwriter music, concert-hikes, theater, and original productions, distributed across ten municipalities of the Peligna Valley: Sulmona, Introdacqua, Capestrano, Pratola Peligna, Raiano, Pacentro, Anversa degli Abruzzi, Prezza, Campo di Giove, and Bugnara.
In 2026, Introdacqua, the festival's birthplace, will once again host the traditional inaugural concert: on July 30, at Bosco Plaja, the Oversoul Street Band will take the stage, kicking off the month of widespread music with their energy. The village will return to the spotlight on August 6 with the special 20th-anniversary event «From Band to Jazz», which brings together the Billy Bros. Swing Orchestra and the Complesso Bandistico Città di Introdacqua on stage, celebrating the bond between band tradition and jazz language.
Muntagninjazz 2026 — 20th edition (anniversary), July 23 – August 22, 2026. Widespread festival in ten municipalities of the Peligna Valley. Below are the stages in Introdacqua, the festival's birthplace.
Introdacqua, the historical home of the festival, will also be a protagonist on other evenings of the program: over the years, the Introdacqua leg has featured concerts in Piazza Attilio Susi and at Bosco Plaja. The complete program of all dates and locations is published progressively on the official website muntagninjazz.it and on the festival's social media channels.
Introdacqua can be reached by car from the A25 motorway (Sulmona-Pratola Peligna exit), just a few kilometers from the village along the Peligna Valley. The nearest train station is in Sulmona, a hub for lines to Rome, Pescara, and L'Aquila, from where you can continue by car or local connections.
The inaugural concert is held at Bosco Plaja, a green area above the village: appropriate clothing for a mountain evening is recommended, and reservations are advised for dinner. For times, meeting points, and information on dinner at Bosco Plaja, it is recommended to consult the official website muntagninjazz.it and the festival's social media channels, or to contact the organizers at the dedicated numbers.
