About Marktlfescht Mühlbach

The Mühlbacha Marktlfescht is a major biennial folk festival that brings the historic center of Rio di Pusteria/Mühlbach to life. Located in the Isarco Valley in the province of Bolzano, this ancient market town celebrates its heritage over three days in July, featuring brass bands, food stalls, a traditional parade, and the ceremonial tapping of the barrel to kick off the festivities. It is a deeply felt event, organized by local associations to honor the long-standing mercantile traditions of this South Tyrolean Marktgemeinde.

Mühlbacha Marktlfescht: Celebrating the Market Town

The Mühlbacha Marktlfescht is the most anticipated folk festival in Rio di Pusteria/Mühlbach, a municipality in the Autonomous Province of Bolzano, nestled in the heart of the Isarco Valley at the gateway to the Puster Valley. Held every two years in July, it transforms the town's historic center into a vibrant celebration of music, gastronomy, and tradition. The event pays homage to Mühlbach's ancient status as a Marktgemeinde (market town), a role it has held since the Middle Ages thanks to its strategic position along trade routes between the Isarco and Puster valleys.

A Village with a Rich History

Rio di Pusteria is a charming medieval village crossed by the Rienza and Rio Valles rivers, featuring a historic center filled with merchant buildings, stately homes, and ancient walls. Just outside the town stands the famous Chiusa di Rio Pusteria, an imposing fortification built between 1458 and 1480 by Duke Sigismund as a customs point and defensive bastion: one of the most striking examples of medieval military architecture in South Tyrol. It is against this backdrop that the Marktlfescht renews the town's bond with its mercantile identity, celebration after celebration.

Three Days of Festivities

The event traditionally spans three days. On Friday evening, the opening ceremony features the organizing committee accompanied by drummers and the local brass band, followed by the tapping of the barrel (the Fassanstich ritual that signals the start of the celebrations) with live music and culinary specialties at the numerous stalls. On Saturday afternoon, the festival continues with musical entertainment and typical South Tyrolean cuisine. Sunday is the highlight: after Holy Mass in the parish church, a grand parade winds through the historic streets, featuring bands, costumed groups, and guest associations, concluding with the Marktlfescht lottery draw in the church square.

A Shared Tradition

The Marktlfescht is organized by local Mühlbach associations (Vereine) and regularly involves groups from twin towns, who join the Sunday parade to strengthen bonds of friendship between Alpine communities. Brass band music, authentic gastronomy, a village atmosphere, and a strong sense of belonging make this festival a defining event for the entire Marktgemeinde and the Isarco Valley.

Biennial Frequency

The Mühlbacha Marktlfescht takes place every two years, in odd-numbered years. The last edition was held in July 2025; the next event is scheduled for 2027. Therefore, the festival is not scheduled for 2026.
