Mountain running through the Cannobina Valley, starting and finishing in the historic village of Cannobio
The Mozzafiato Trail is a premier trail running event held in Cannobio, a picturesque village overlooking Lake Maggiore in the Province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola, in northern Piedmont. Organized by the A.S.D. Mozzafiato Team, the event attracts runners and mountain enthusiasts every year, drawn by the trails of the Cannobina Valley—one of the wildest and most fascinating valleys in the Alps, nestled between the Ossola region, Switzerland, and Lake Maggiore.
The beauty of the Mozzafiato Trail lies in the variety of distances and elevation gains, catering to both seasoned athletes and those new to trail running. Options range from the Cannobina Trail, the long course of approximately 36 km with over 2,000 meters of elevation gain, to the more accessible Mezzafiato Trail of about 21 km, and the Relay format, designed for pairs to tackle the medium course by splitting it into two sections between Cannobio and Lunecco.
The start and finish lines for all races are set in the heart of the historic village of Cannobio, with its lakeside promenade, medieval alleys, and squares facing the water—a setting that makes the event special for supporters and spectators alike. During the race, athletes pass through the small hamlets of the Cannobina Valley, where they are greeted by the warm hospitality of the local residents along the route.
Beyond the competition, the Mozzafiato Trail is an opportunity to discover a region rich in history and tradition, featuring forests, mule tracks, and ancient settlements. It is a weekend of outdoor sports that celebrates Cannobio and the entire valley during the perfect time of year—the start of summer—to experience the Piedmontese mountains.
The 2026 edition of the Mozzafiato Trail, the sixth, is scheduled for Sunday, June 21, 2026, in Cannobio. The format with three routes is confirmed: the long Cannobina Trail (36 km, D+ 2,066 m), the medium Mezzafiato Trail (20.9 km, D+ 882 m), and the Relay for pairs, which splits the medium route into two sections between Cannobio and Lunecco. All races start and finish in the historic village of Cannobio.
