The ultimate summer food festival in San Nicola Baronia, Irpinia
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Mortadella Festival is one of the youngest and most popular highlights of the summer in San Nicola Baronia, a village of about 850 residents in the upper Ufita Valley, in the province of Avellino, Campania. Launched in 2024 by the Comitato Festa Sant'Rock, the event effectively kicks off the town's summer calendar, drawing many visitors from across the Irpinian Baronia to Piazza XXIII Novembre.
The concept is simple yet effective: take a classic, beloved Italian cold cut—mortadella—and reinterpret it through the flavors and traditions of Irpinian cuisine. It is a unique evening that blends street food, music, and local social life. In just two editions, the format has already found its audience, attracting families, young people, and locals returning home for the holidays.
The heart of the festival is the tasting trail set up at the stalls in the square. The 2025 edition featured a menu designed for casual, on-the-go dining:
The pairing of caciocavallo impiccato—a typical Irpinian specialty cooked over an open fire—with stracciatella and pistachio pesto perfectly captures the spirit of the festival: no culinary pretension, just a focus on high-quality ingredients and crowd-pleasing combinations.
As is tradition for festivals in inland Campania, the food is accompanied by entertainment. The evening features live music followed by a DJ set in the square: guests can eat, drink, and dance outdoors in a relaxed, informal atmosphere. Entry to the event is free, and you only pay for what you consume at the stalls, with typical village festival prices.
The Municipality of San Nicola Baronia is located in northeastern Irpinia, in the hilly belt that marks the transition between Campania and Puglia. The village preserves the 16th-century Church of the Annunziata and the water mill park at the foot of the Ralla hill, featuring two restored historic mills. It is best known for its agricultural products: peppers (specifically the 'coppoloni' and 'friggitelli' varieties), Ufita white garlic, and Baronia chickpeas, as well as the ancient craft of reed weaving used to create traditional 'fascedde' baskets.
The Mortadella Festival is part of a rich local calendar that keeps the community busy throughout the seasons: the Wild Asparagus Festival organized by the Pro Loco Sannicolese in spring, the Feast and Fair of San Pasquale Baylon on May 17th with the Spit-Roasted Pork Festival, the Feast of San Rocco in late August with the Sant'Rock musical evenings, the Feast of the Addolorata and the Cicatielli Festival on the third Sunday of September, and finally, the Bonfires of San Nicola on December 6th and 7th in honor of the patron saint.
As of this update, the 2026 edition of the Mortadella Festival has not yet been officially announced. The first two editions took place in the second half of July, but dates are not yet confirmed. Those wishing to attend can follow updates from the Comitato Festa Sant'Rock and the Municipality of San Nicola Baronia, which typically release the event poster a few weeks before the date.
The Mortadella Festival in San Nicola Baronia, in the province of Avellino, does not yet have an official date for 2026. The 2024 and 2025 editions were held in July in Piazza XXIII Novembre, with stalls opening in the evening and free entry.
While awaiting confirmation, it is recommended to monitor the channels of the Comitato Festa Sant'Rock, which manages the organization, and the municipality's summer calendar: in previous years, announcements were made just a few weeks before the event. We will update this page as soon as the date and program for a potential third edition are released.
The festival is held outdoors in Piazza XXIII Novembre, in the Piano di zona area of San Nicola Baronia (83050), province of Avellino.
By car: the reference motorway exit is Grottaminarda on the A16 Naples-Canosa, from which you continue along the SS90 state road towards Baronia. The town is connected to the nearby centers of Carife, Vallesaccarda, and Trevico. Parking is available in the streets adjacent to the square.
In previous editions, the stalls opened at 8:00 PM, with the evening continuing until late at night. Entry is free: you only pay for food and drinks at the stalls.
It is an outdoor evening in the hills, so a light sweater may be useful even in mid-summer. The event is family-friendly, and the area is accessible.
Updates are available on the Comitato Festa Sant'Rock - San Nicola Baronia Facebook page and the Sistema Irpinia portal of the Province of Avellino.
