About Snail Festival

In the heart of the medieval village of Moricone, at the foot of the Lucretili Mountains, the Snail Festival brings the most iconic dish of local peasant tradition to Piazza Sante Aureli: stewed snails, prepared according to a recipe passed down through generations. Organized by the Pro Loco APS Moricone, the festival is part of the popular celebrations for Blessed Bernardo, which bring the first Sunday of July to life every year with religious services and the 'Bernardiadi' games. Expect two evenings of open-air dining, live music, and village conviviality.

A young festival in an ancient village

The Snail Festival is one of the most recent additions to the summer calendar of Moricone, a small town in the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital, in the Lazio region, overlooking the Tiber Valley at the foot of the Lucretili Mountains. Created by the Pro Loco APS Moricone, the festival has quickly established itself as the gastronomic highlight that kicks off the town's summer, drawing not only locals but also visitors from the Roman Sabina and neighboring towns to Piazza Sante Aureli.

The village hosting the event is one of the most charming in this part of the Sabina region: the Savelli Baronial Palace, expanded in 1619 by Marcantonio Borghese, dominates the medieval square, while the Museum of the Agrarian Landscape and the Olive Tree, housed in a deconsecrated church, tells the story of the olive oil culture that has shaped this territory, which falls within the production area of the Sabina PDO Extra Virgin Olive Oil.

The signature dish: stewed snails

The undisputed star is the stewed snail, prepared in large pots by Pro Loco volunteers and served in generous portions. It is a classic dish of peasant 'cucina povera', linked to the seasonal gathering in the fields after the rains, which has never gone out of fashion here and retains an almost ritualistic value: first-time visitors try it with curiosity, while locals find in it the familiar taste of home.

Alongside the snails, the festival kitchen offers a complete popular menu, designed for those who prefer more conventional flavors:

  • Stewed snails, the event's specialty
  • Traditional local pasta
  • Grilled arrosticini and lamb skewers
  • Sausage sandwiches and french fries
  • Draft beer, wine, soft drinks, and water

Takeaway service is available for those who wish to enjoy their portions at home, while seating in the square is limited: reservations are highly recommended.

The Bernardiadi and the Feast of Blessed Bernardo

The festival is not an isolated event: it is part of the celebrations in honor of Blessed Bernardo Maria of Jesus (Bernardo Silvestrelli), the Passionist religious figure linked to the shrine of Moricone, which the town traditionally celebrates on the first Sunday of July. The Bernardiadi revolve around the religious functionsโ€”popular games where local districts and groups compete in skill tests, races, and team challenges: a deeply felt moment of collective identity that involves both young and old, making the week of the feast the true heart of the Moricone summer.

Music and evening atmosphere

The festival evenings typically begin at 8:00 PM and continue late into the night with live entertainment in the square: light music and ballroom dancing on the first night, and a DJ set on the second. The atmosphere is that of an authentic Lazio village feast: long tables, volunteer service, children running between the tables, and no frills.

Why visit

For those visiting the Sabina region, the Snail Festival is the perfect opportunity to combine an unusual gastronomic stop with a walk through the historic center of Moricone, among alleys, stairways, and views of the Tiber Valley. Nearby, you can easily reach the Lucretili Mountains Regional Natural Park for a morning hike or visit the curious Pozzo Fornillo, a karst cavity from which thin puffs of steam emerge in winter. An evening at this festival is worth more than many guidebooks for understanding how life really feels in these villages just an hour from Rome.
