Great classical music from the Morellino Classica Festival at the Church of San Giorgio in Montemerano
The Morellino Classica Festival is the premier classical music event in the Maremma region of Grosseto. Established in 2012 and reaching its 15th edition in 2026, the festival takes place every summer, from June to August, bringing world-class concerts to the hills, wineries, and villages of the Morellino di Scansano territory in Tuscany. Artistically directed by Pietro Bonfilio and organized by the La Società della Musica Cultural Association, the festival has a strong international focus, offering around twenty events each year in the most beautiful locations of the Maremma.
One of the most beloved stops on the tour is Montemerano, an enchanting medieval village awarded the 'Orange Flag' by the Italian Touring Club and a hamlet of the municipality of Manciano, in the Province of Grosseto. The concert is held in the Church of San Giorgio, a jewel overlooking the village square that houses masterpieces of sacred art. Its acoustics and intimate atmosphere provide the ideal setting for chamber music and solo recitals. It is a unique opportunity to hear prominent performers in a setting of rare beauty.
A distinctive feature of the Morellino Classica Festival is its bond with local food and wine: many concerts are accompanied by a tasting of Morellino di Scansano DOCG, the famous red wine that gives the festival its name, paired with typical Maremma products. The experience thus combines the enjoyment of great music with the pleasures of the table and the landscape, in the true Maremma spirit.
Attending a concert in Montemerano also means discovering one of the most beautiful villages in southern Tuscany: cobbled alleys, the scenic Piazza del Castello, medieval walls, and views over the Maremma hills. A few kilometers away are the famous Saturnia thermal baths, the village of Manciano, and the Morellino countryside, making the musical evening part of a broader journey of discovery through the territory.
The Montemerano event of the 15th Morellino Classica Festival is scheduled for Thursday, August 21, 2026, at 9:00 PM in the Church of San Giorgio. The star of the evening is violinist Cihat Aşkın, one of the most appreciated interpreters of his instrument, with a recital titled 'The Virtuoso Violin: Classicism, Tradition, Innovation'.
The program weaves together the architectural rigor of Johann Sebastian Bach with the overwhelming virtuosity of Niccolò Paganini, in a journey through the most demanding pages of the solo violin repertoire. An evening that focuses on the dialogue between tradition and innovation, within the intimate acoustics of the village church.
