The village carnival on the hills of Cesena, with mini floats and a party in Piazza Maggiore
The Montiano Carnival is one of the most cherished winter events for this small municipality in Emilia-Romagna, perched on the hills of Cesena in the province of Forlì-Cesena. Every year, on a Sunday in February, Piazza Maggiore transforms into a large festive space where the characteristic mini floats, handmade by local families and volunteers, parade. It's an authentic carnival, far from large tourist events, preserving the warmth and participation typical of Romagna communities.
The origins of the Montiano Carnival date back to 1985, when large floats were prepared by the local youth groups. Over time, the event evolved, transforming into today's family celebration, with mini floats pulled by hand by parents and children from local schools. Since 2006, the organization has been entrusted to the Pro Loco Montiano, which carries on the legacy and continues to involve the entire community in the preparation of masks, costumes, and decorations.
The festival comes alive in the early afternoon in Piazza Maggiore with the arrival of the mini floats, which each year reinterpret different themes, from movie sagas to characters beloved by children. The program includes:
The Montiano Carnival is part of the rich Carnival landscape of Romagna, which between February and March lights up villages and cities with parades, floats, and square parties. Unlike the grand carnivals of Santarcangelo or Gambettola, Montiano's retains the intimate dimension of a village: a perfect opportunity to discover an authentic corner of the Cesena hinterland, between the Rocca Malatestiana and views of the vineyards.
Visiting the Montiano Carnival means immersing yourself in a genuine celebration, built by the community and for the community. It is ideal for families with children, but also for those seeking a carnival away from the crowds, where they can rediscover the truest spirit of Romagna tradition in the small municipality of Montiano.
The 24th edition of the Montiano Carnival was held on Sunday, February 15, 2026, starting at 2:30 PM in Piazza Maggiore. This year again, the protagonists were the mini floats handmade by local families, reinterpreting themes dear to younger generations such as Stranger Things, Minecraft, and Super Mario. The afternoon was enlivened by shows, music, and the traditional distribution of candy for everyone. The event, with free admission, was organized by Pro Loco Montiano.
