Shows, masquerade balls, and festivities in the heart of the Ossola Valley
Every winter, the Montecrestese Carnival transforms this village in the Ossola Valley, in the province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola (Piedmont), into a small kingdom of masks, music, and fun. Organized by the Pro Loco Montecrestese together with the municipality and local associations, it is one of the community's most cherished events: an occasion where the entire village, from families to children, gathers to celebrate with joy.
The heart of the festival is the Cultural Recreational Center of Montecrestese, which hosts the carnival evenings. The program revolves around three essential ingredients: shows, masquerade balls, and festivities. These evenings are designed for socializing, dancing in costume, and experiencing the lighthearted spirit of Carnival in the warm, family-friendly atmosphere typical of small towns in the upper valley.
The carnival tradition of Montecrestese does not end within the village walls. The Pro Loco Montecrestese carnival group participates in the parades of local Carnivals, forging bonds with neighboring communities: in 2026, the group took part in the celebrations of the Domodossola Carnival and other events in the Ossola Valley and Lake Maggiore, in collaboration with towns like Cannobio and the Vigezzo Valley. It is a sign of a network of popular festivals that, during the Carnival season, connects the entire Ossola territory.
Far from the large tourist-heavy Carnivals, the one in Montecrestese offers the authentic experience of an Alpine village festival: no anonymous crowds, just a community coming together to offer evenings of music and masks. It is the perfect opportunity to discover a lesser-known corner of Piedmont, combining the festival with a walk through the village districts and the scenic spots of the lower Ossola Valley.
