The international UTMB World Series trail race along the Walser paths at the foot of Monte Rosa
The Monte Rosa Walserwaeg by UTMB is the trail running race that has brought the international UTMB World Series circuit to Valle d'Aosta. It takes place in the Monte Rosa area, based in Val d'Ayas and passing through the Municipality of Brusson, along the historic paths that for centuries have connected the Matterhorn slope to that of Monte Rosa.
"Walserwaeg" means "the Walser path". The Walser are a population of Germanic origin, who left Upper Valais in the Middle Ages to settle on the highest slopes of the Alps, particularly in the Lys Valley and Val d'Ayas. Their heritage is still alive in the wood and stone architecture, traditions, and language, an ancient variant of High Alemannic German. Running this trail means traversing eight centuries of human history, through stone villages like Antagnod, Champoluc, and the high-altitude pastures.
The routes wind through perennial glaciers, flowery meadows, larch and fir forests, and the characteristic villages of Val d'Ayas — Challand-Saint-Victor, Challand-Saint-Anselme, Brusson, Antagnod, and Champoluc — always under the gaze of the great peaks of Monte Rosa. It is technical and challenging terrain, ideal for those seeking an authentic high-mountain running experience.
Entry into the UTMB World Series circuit has placed the Monte Rosa territory and the Valle d'Aosta Region on the international trail running map. In addition to the long races for experienced athletes, the program includes short distances and events for younger participants, making this a widespread celebration of mountain running.
The second edition of the Monte Rosa Walserwaeg by UTMB confirms its place in the UTMB World Series circuit, based in Val d'Ayas and the Monte Rosa area. The 2026 program includes races for all levels, from short distances to ultra-distances that award Running Stones valid for the circuit finals. Priority registration opens on September 2, and general registration on September 4.
Full routes and details on the official website mrww.utmb.world.
Brusson and Val d'Ayas can be reached by car from the A5 Turin-Aosta motorway, exit Verrès, then take the SR45 along the Val d'Ayas. By train to Verrès, then a local bus to the valley.
Registration is online on the official website mrww.utmb.world. The long distances award Running Stones valid for access to the UTMB finals.
These are high-mountain races: mandatory equipment, adequate training, and advance booking of accommodation in the villages of Val d'Ayas are strongly recommended.
