Float parades, costumes, and street performers in the heart of the Castelli Romani
The Monte Compatri Carnival is the February highlight that brings vibrant color to the village of Monte Compatri, located in the Metropolitan City of Rome, right in the heart of the Castelli Romani. After a long hiatus, the festival was revived in 2023 by the Pro Loco Monte Compatri with the support of the local council. Since then, it has become one of the most popular days on the town's calendar, drawing families from all the surrounding municipalities.
The heart of the event is the allegorical float parade, which starts at Piazzale Nassiriya and reaches Viale Busnago before winding its way up toward the historic center. The procession is traditionally led by Majorettes and the Compatrum Folkloric Musical Corps, who set the rhythm for the day with their music. Behind them march creative masks, fantastical characters, and costume groups that have been prepared for weeks by local associations and families.
The floats, often inspired by current events and local satire, are handcrafted and accompanied by confetti, streamers, and dance music. This is a carnival that focuses on authenticity rather than scale: here, the festival is truly made by the residents themselves.
In the afternoon, the spotlight shifts to street performers who bring Piazzale Busnago—the famous Passeggiata of Monte Compatri—to life with jugglers, stilt walkers, clowns, and shows designed for children. The area is filled with stalls, traditional seasonal sweets (especially frappe and castagnole), and refreshment points managed by local associations.
Perched at an altitude of over 500 meters on the Monti Prenestini, Monte Compatri is one of the most scenic villages in Lazio: from the historic center, the view stretches across the Roman countryside all the way to the sea. The town is known for its white DOC wine, the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, and a lively calendar of popular festivals, from the Saint Joseph Fair to summer food festivals. The Monte Compatri Carnival fits perfectly into this tradition: a public celebration that, like many in the Castelli Romani, unites different generations and strengthens community identity.
Those looking for the spectacular, large-scale national carnival events won't find them here, and that is precisely its strength: the Monte Compatri Carnival is a child-friendly, free festival that is easy to reach from Rome and perfect to combine with a walk through the village and lunch at a local fraschetta in the Castelli. The dates change every year according to the liturgical calendar—ranging from mid-February to early March—so it is always best to check the program on the Pro Loco channels.
On Sunday, February 15, 2026, Monte Compatri transformed into an explosion of color, music, and joy. Children, families, and costumed groups filled the streets of the town center for one of the most well-attended editions in recent years.
The festival's headquarters was Piazzale Busnago, the local Passeggiata, which was lively from 10:00 AM until the evening. The float parade, opened by the Majorettes and the Compatrum Folkloric Corps, led the procession with energy and tradition, followed by creative masks and fantastical characters brought to life by the town's associations and families.
The event was organized by the Pro Loco Monte Compatri with the support of the Municipality of Monte Compatri; the Local Police and local volunteer associations ensured safety. All activities were free to attend.
By car from Rome: take the A1 motorway, exit at Monteporzio Catone, or via Casilina/Via Anagnina (approx. 30 km from the center). During the parade days, parking areas are available at Sassi, the Sports Field, and Piazzale Nassiriya, with a shuttle service to the center. By train: Monte Compatri-Pantano station (Metro C line / former Rome-Pantano) or the FL6 Zagarolo station, followed by a Cotral bus.
The event generally takes place on a Sunday, from approximately 10:00 AM to 6:30 PM. Free admission to the parade and shows.
Arrive early to find parking, dress in layers (it gets cold in the hills even in February), and bring the children in costume: confetti and streamers are available on-site. The historic center is hilly with staircases, so comfortable footwear is recommended.
