The Patronal Feast of Castel Gandolfo

Every year, on the first weekend of September, Castel Gandolfo gathers to honor its patron saint, Saint Sebastian the Martyr, in one of the most cherished celebrations of the Castelli Romani. The small village overlooking Lake Albano, in the province of Rome (Lazio)—world-renowned for the Apostolic Palace and papal residences—experiences days of faith and festivity that weave popular devotion with music, processions, and the spectacle of fireworks over the lake.

A Tradition Born in 1867

The feast is not celebrated on January 20th, the liturgical day of Saint Sebastian, but in September; the reason lies in an event from 1867. During the cholera epidemic that hit the nearby town of Albano Laziale hard, Castel Gandolfo remained almost untouched. The inhabitants attributed this protection to the intercession of Saint Sebastian and organized a spontaneous procession with the image of the Saint through the streets of the town. In memory of that event, a papal authorization moved the festivities from the cold month of January to the milder month of September, when the feast is still celebrated today.

Highlights of the Feast

The religious heart of the celebration is the solemn Eucharist in honor of Saint Sebastian at the Parish Church of San Tommaso da Villanova, a Baroque jewel designed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini. The mass is followed by the blessing of the patron saint and the traditional procession of the Saint's relics through the village streets, accompanied by the notes of the Castel Gandolfo Town Band.
