Mompeo Awakens in the Renaissance

A Sabine village returning to the 16th century

Perched on a hill amidst the olive groves of the Sabina region, the municipality of Mompeo (Rieti province, Lazio) has only a few hundred inhabitants but preserves a historic center clustered around the Castello Orsini Naro, a building of medieval origin later transformed into a noble residence between the 16th and 17th centuries. It is precisely this dual identity—the defensive fortress and the stately palace—that inspires Mompeo Awakens in the Renaissance, the re-enactment that brings the atmosphere of the Renaissance era back to the village for a weekend in June.

Pageants, flag-wavers, and combat games

The heart of the event is the Mompeo historical pageant, which opens the evenings by parading through the alleys with ladies, knights, men-at-arms, and costumed participants. They are joined by historical groups invited from across central Italy: flag-wavers, drummers, and masters-at-arms who offer demonstrations of historical fencing and combat, as well as dance troupes performing choreographies from Renaissance treatises. The performances take place in the squares and open spaces of the village, without stages or barriers, allowing the public to watch just steps away from the performers.

The open castle and the mystery to solve

One of the most popular attractions is the animated tour of the castle halls, where costumed actors guide visitors through rooms and frescoes, turning the tour into a small theatrical investigation. The rest of the village hosts exhibitions of arts, weapons, and period costumes, photographic displays dedicated to local history, and short theatrical performances, while daytime activities include banner hunts and ancient games designed especially for children and families.

The tavern and the flavors of yesteryear

The gastronomic experience is managed by the Renaissance tavern set up by Pro Loco volunteers: open-air tables, service in historical attire, and a menu built around the typical products of the Sabina region, starting with the Sabina PDO extra virgin olive oil, one of the oldest in Italy with documented tradition. Legume soups, spit-roasted meats, local cheeses, and simple desserts accompany the evenings until late.

Fireworks, magic, and the grand finale

The evenings conclude with the most spectacular shows: knightly jousts, fire-breather performances, and jugglers, along with night processions illuminated by torches. This is the moment when the village, already charming in its own right, reaches its most striking effect, with the castle walls serving as a natural backdrop.

Why it's worth the trip

• Authenticity: the re-enactment is created by residents, not an events agency; the participants are largely from the village.
• Intimate scale: no crowds like at a major palio; you can walk around in a few minutes and see everything.
• Location: Mompeo is just over an hour from Rome and allows you to combine your visit with other Sabine villages such as Casperia, Roccantica, and Montenero Sabino.

An evolving event

In recent years, Mompeo has been the protagonist of an important cultural regeneration project, also supported by PNRR funds, which has multiplied the initiatives in the village.
