The Spring Carnival of the Modena East district
The Modena East Carnival, known by the title "Tutti giù dal Carro", is the traditional Spring Carnival of the eastern district of the Municipality of Modena, in Emilia-Romagna. Organized entirely by the Modena East Citizens' Committee, the event is now a highly anticipated occasion for families, schools, and associations in the neighborhood, who transform the district's streets into a large, colorful, and festive procession every year.
The heart of the day is the Parade of Masked Groups, which kicks off from Piazza Liberazione in the early afternoon. The parade features primarily children and students from Modena's schools and neighborhood associations, accompanied by floats and themed choreography. The procession travels along Viale 22 Aprile and Viale Resistenza, enlivened by music and the participation of the entire neighborhood.
Along the route and throughout the afternoon, there's no shortage of entertainment: the Town Band and local folk groups, street artists, dance performances, face painting, and games designed for the youngest attendees. Refreshment stands and street food accompany the festivities until the grand finale.
The parade concludes at the Laghetto of Modena East, where the mask awards ceremony takes place in the late afternoon. The masks are often dedicated to a specific theme, such as cartoon characters. This is the most anticipated moment for the children, who see their efforts in preparing their costumes recognized.
Promoted by the volunteer efforts of the Modena East Citizens' Committee, the Carnival is completely free and designed to involve the entire neighborhood community. It represents one of the many carnival traditions that liven up the Municipality of Modena and its province in Emilia-Romagna, in a festive atmosphere celebrating the arrival of spring.
On Sunday, March 15, 2026, the Modena East district celebrated the 20th edition of "Tutti giù dal Carro". The Parade of Masked Groups started from Piazza Liberazione at 3 PM, enlivening Viale 22 Aprile and Viale Resistenza with schools, associations, and families from the neighborhood.
The afternoon was filled with music, street artists, entertainment for children, and street food, with a grand finale at the Laghetto of Modena East and the awarding of the most beautiful masks. The free event was organized by the Modena East Citizens' Committee.
The Modena East Carnival takes place on a Sunday afternoon between late winter and early spring, with a meeting point at Piazza Liberazione, in the Modena East district. The parade starts in the early afternoon and concludes at the Laghetto of Modena East.
