The spring concert of the oldest male choir in the Vinschgau Valley
The Frühjahrskonzert des MGV Schlanders is the annual spring event of the Männergesangsverein (MGV) Schlanders, the historic male choir of the main town in the Vinschgau Valley, in the municipality of Silandro/Schlanders, in the province of Bolzano (South Tyrol). Every year in May, the choir gathers its audience at the Kulturhaus Karl Schönherr for an evening entirely dedicated to choral singing: a varied and harmonious program ranging from Tyrolean Volkslied to the most well-known pieces of the male choral repertoire.
The MGV Schlanders was founded in 1860 as the Liedertafel Schlanders and is the second oldest choir in South Tyrol after the one in Brunico/Bruneck. In 1865, the association made its public debut under the name Männergesangverein Schlanders, and its first statutes were approved on May 10th of that same year. In 1907, the choir joined the Tiroler Sängerbund. Through the two World Wars and the challenges of the 20th century, the association has kept alive a tradition that still represents a piece of the Vinschgau cultural identity today.
The choir's mission is the preservation, promotion, and dissemination of choral singing, folk heritage, and in particular the Tyrolean Volkslied. The Frühjahrskonzert is a staple of the MGV's annual calendar, alongside the Advent concert, the Christmas party, the Carnival revue, and the Josefimesse. The spring evening features sacred and secular pieces, folk songs, and more demanding works, often with the participation of guest choirs or local soloists. Admission to the concert is traditionally free, and the event takes place in the evening, starting around 7:00 PM.
The concert takes place in the heart of Silandro/Schlanders, the main hub of the Vinschgau Valley (Vinschgau), a bilingual Alpine valley known for its apple orchards, high-altitude trails, and a rich network of cultural and musical associations. The Kulturhaus Karl Schönherr, named after the playwright of Tyrolean origin, is the natural venue for the town's cultural events. Attending the Frühjahrskonzert means immersing yourself in the authentic atmosphere of South Tyrolean male singing, in a setting that combines tradition, community, and Alpine landscape.
The 2026 spring concert of the Männergesangsverein Schlanders took place on Saturday, May 9, 2026, from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM, at the Kulturhaus Karl Schönherr in Silandro/Schlanders, in the Vinschgau Valley. The evening, with free admission, featured a varied and refined program dedicated to choral singing and the Tyrolean Volkslied, confirming the event as a staple of the town's cultural calendar.
