The village of Piè La Villa becomes an open-air museum of contemporary art
MEMORIALIA — DOMUS Act III is the third chapter of the DOMUS project, conceived by the L'Aquila-based curatorial collective Afedia. From July 9 to 12, 2026, the village of Piè La Villa, a hamlet of Tornimparte in the province of L'Aquila, turns into a true open-air museum: cellars, alleys, courtyards, and spaces suspended in time become meeting points between past and present, temporarily inhabited by contemporary art.
MEMORIALIA stems from the idea that every village holds a silent memory, deposited in its stones, architecture, and the stories of its inhabitants. The artists' interventions do not invade these places but reactivate them: they give a voice back to normally invisible spaces and transform them into narrative devices. Posters, photographs, installations, videos, and sculptures engage with the original environments, creating an itinerary that invites the public to slow down, walk through the village, and rediscover its stories.
The 2026 edition brings together numerous artists who intervene in the village spaces: Roberto Beragnoli, Sara Bulma, Simone Caione, Stefano Caldarone, Mascia Cima, Daniela Carmen Gizzi, Erika Ledonne, Giorgio Serri, Matteo Urbani, Ilaria Vaccarelli, and Cervo Zoppo. Their works range from posters, photography, and installation to video art and sculpture, all designed in relation to the spaces that host them.
In addition to the exhibitions, the program includes live performances by the E-Motion group with "Texture — Corpo in Trama", interventions by Cervo Zoppo, a music therapy workshop led by Azzurra Miele, and the participatory moment "Orditura di memorie collettive" (Weaving Collective Memories) with the local residents. The Paesaggi Sonori (Sound Landscapes) series brings live music to symbolic locations in the area: on July 11, a concert by Eve Matin in the church of Santo Stefano, and on July 12, closing the event, a live performance by Iosonouncane at the evocative Forca di Castiglione.
DOMUS is an open-air art project born in L'Aquila, a city that still bears the scars of the 2009 earthquake, where entire urban spaces remain hidden behind scaffolding and architectural silence. Founded by Alessandra Condello and Diletta De Santis, the Afedia collective transforms private spaces, courtyards, and buildings under renovation into temporary exhibition venues. With MEMORIALIA, the project leaves the capital city to reach a village in the Abruzzo hinterland, bringing contemporary art into direct contact with the community of Tornimparte.
The third edition of DOMUS takes place from July 9 to 12, 2026, in Piè La Villa, a hamlet of Tornimparte. Thursday, July 9: vernissage at 6:00 PM and screening of "Qualcosa è caduto dalla luna" at 9:00 PM. Friday, July 10: exhibitions open and performance "Texture — Corpo in Trama" by the E-Motion group at 5:30 PM. Saturday, July 11: music therapy workshop with Azzurra Miele, performance by Cervo Zoppo and the E-Motion group, and at 9:30 PM the concert by Eve Matin in the church of Santo Stefano. Sunday, July 12: exhibitions open, the participatory moment "Orditura di memorie collettive" with the residents, and, in closing, the live performance by Iosonouncane at Forca di Castiglione.
