Conviviality, seasonal cuisine, and popular tournaments in Piazza Umberto I
The May 1st Festival in Nazzano is one of those events that captures the character of Lazio's small villages better than any guidebook. On the day dedicated to workers, while cities empty out, the historic center of this town in the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital fills with long tables, lively chatter, and the aromas of home cooking. The stage is Piazza Umberto I, the space where the community has always gathered, just a short walk from Castello Savelli, which dominates the tuff spur upon which the town is built.
The heart of the day is the food stand, which opens at noon and reopens in the evening. The menu follows the season and the territory: pasta with asparagus and guanciale, arrosticini, french fries, and fava beans with pecorinoโthe classic pairing that is the very symbol of May 1st in Lazio. There is no search for sophistication here: you eat sitting in the square, with generous portions and village-festival prices, served by the volunteers of the association organizing the event.
The afternoon is dedicated to games. The card tournamentsโburraco and briscolaโare the most popular: teams are formed, participants register with a symbolic fee, and play for hours at tables set up in the square. This is followed by the billiards tournament, while foosball attracts the younger crowd. Prizes are awarded to the winners, but the spirit of the day is above all about friendly competition between neighbors, friends, and families.
Those who arrive for the festival will find much more. Nazzano is the historic center of the Nazzano Tevere-Farfa Nature Reserve, the oldest protected area in the Lazio Region, established in 1979, where the Tiber slows down to form the so-called Lake of Nazzano, a paradise for birdlife and birdwatching. The village stretches along a single street that climbs up to the 13th-century castle, which was expanded and fortified over time by the Orsini and Savelli families. The River Museum, with its naturalistic and archaeological sections, is housed in the castle's ancient stables and granaries.
The combination of an authentic popular festival and a river landscape less than an hour from Rome makes May 1st in Nazzano a perfect day trip: a walk along the reserve's trails in the morning, lunch in the square, tournaments in the afternoon, and dinner before heading home.
The event is managed by the local youth association Giovani Fuori Classe, under the patronage of the Municipality of Nazzano. It is an example of how, in the towns of the Tiber Valley, local youth groups often keep the tradition of community festivals alive, successfully combining food, games, and social life in a simple and proven formula.
The May 1st Festival 2026 took place on Friday, May 1st, in Piazza Umberto I, in the historic center of Nazzano, with a program spread throughout the day. The food stand opened at 12:30 PM for lunch, offering pasta with asparagus and guanciale, arrosticini, french fries, and the classic fava beans and pecorino pairing, typical of the Lazio May 1st tradition.
From the afternoon, the square transformed into a large play area: at 4:00 PM, the card tournaments (burraco and briscola) began with pair registration; at 5:30 PM, it was time for the billiards tournament, accompanied by foosball for the younger participants. Prizes for the winners of the various categories concluded the competitive part.
In the evening, the food stand reopened at 8:00 PM for dinner, extending the festivities late into the night in a cheerful, shared atmosphere. The event was organized by the Giovani Fuori Classe association, with the patronage of the Municipality of Nazzano.
