The Marian feast that extends the Easter season in Mesagne
In Mesagne, in the heart of the Brindisi province, the Mater Domini Festival is much more than a religious observance: it is a moment when the entire city gathers around the Madonna venerated in the Mater Domini Sanctuary. Celebrated in the weeks following Easter, the festival "extends the joy" of the Easter season and stands as one of the most deeply felt identity-defining events for the Mesagne community, attracting faithful and pilgrims from neighboring towns in the Salento region of Puglia.
The Mater Domini Sanctuary, with its baroque architecture, is the heart of the celebrations. Here, during the festival days, the image of the Madonna is honored and guarded, serving as a constant destination for prayer. The local devotion is so deeply rooted that it has fostered a spiritual twinning with the parish of S. Maria Mater Domini in Pisignano, a village in the Lecce area of Salento, whose pilgrims traditionally participate in the festivities.
The liturgical heart of the festival is the three-day preparation period (triduum), marked by rosaries and holy masses, often presided over by the Archbishop of Brindisi-Ostuni. The most anticipated moment remains the city procession: the statue of Mater Domini travels through the streets of the town center accompanied by the notes of the "Cittร de Mesagne" Youth Band, in a parade of faith and popular participation that involves families, confraternities, and associations.
Alongside the strictly liturgical dimension, the festival has taken on a high-quality cultural profile in recent years thanks to the Meditation Concert performed by the "San Leucio" Archdiocesan Polyphonic Choir. This event transforms the sanctuary into a treasure trove of sacred harmonies and confirms Mesagne as a reference point for choral music in the Brindisi area.
The festival setting is completed by illuminations in the sanctuary square and fireworks, typical elements of Puglian patronal feasts. There is no shortage of charity collections to support parish initiatives, a sign of a festival that unites faith, tradition, and care for others. For the Municipality of Mesagne, Mater Domini is a shared intangible heritage, capable of renewing the bond between the city and its patroness every year.
The 2026 edition of the Mater Domini Festival, organized by the Mater Domini Sanctuary Parish, opened on Thursday, April 9th, with the preparation triduum and culminated in the grand city procession on Sunday, April 12th. Enriching the festival were the traditional Meditation Concert performed by the "San Leucio" Archdiocesan Polyphonic Choir, the illuminations on the sanctuary square, and the fireworks. The celebrations concluded on Monday, April 13th, with the Thanksgiving Mass.
