About Mascarata Carnival

The Mascarata Carnival is a festive event that brings the spirit of Carnival to the alleys of Morra De Sanctis, a small village in the Alta Irpinia region of Avellino province. It is an afternoon filled with color, laughter, and tradition: the gathering in Piazza San Rocco, the masked parade through the town center, folk music, and the active participation of residents and visitors alike. This simple, community-driven event is organized by local associations and the Pro Loco, with the support of the Municipality.

The Mascarata Carnival in Morra De Sanctis

In the heart of winter, the small village of Morra De Sanctis dresses up in masks and confetti for the Mascarata Carnival. This is not a grand, postcard-perfect carnival with monumental floats and paid grandstands, but something much rarer: an authentic village festival, built by local associations and experienced primarily by those who live in Morra. The village, perched at an altitude of 839 meters in the Alta Irpinia region of Avellino province, has just over a thousand inhabitants; on the day of the Mascarata, its streets fill up well beyond the usual.

An afternoon of color, laughter, and tradition

The festival format is simple and well-established. The meeting point is Piazza San Rocco, where masked participants—children, families, groups of friends, and the town's youth—gather in the early afternoon. From there, the masked parade takes shape, winding through the town center amidst music, improvised dancing, and the natural joy of Carnival. There is no ticket or registration required: just show up, preferably in costume.

  • Gathering in Piazza San Rocco in the early afternoon
  • Masked parade through the streets of the town center
  • Traditional folk music and dancing
  • Open participation for residents and visitors
  • Intergenerational celebration, designed especially for children and families

The Mascarata in the Irpinian Carnival tradition

The term mascarata is no coincidence: in Irpinia, it refers to a specific traditional form of Carnival, a danced procession featuring symbolic figures from the folk repertoire, accompanied by traditional music and tarantella rhythms. This family of rituals is widespread in many municipalities of the Avellino province, alongside other famous expressions such as the Zeza—a popular sung theater featuring castanets, tambourines, and triccheballacche—the quadriglia, and the ballo 'ntreccio. Behind the apparent simplicity of these festivals lie ancient propitiatory rites linked to fertility, the cycle of the seasons, and the transition from winter to spring.

Morra De Sanctis may not have the national fame of the carnivals in Montemarano or Serino, but its Mascarata belongs to the same cultural family and shares its spirit: a community that recognizes itself, dresses up, and occupies public space for a day.

Who organizes the festival

The Mascarata is the result of a collaboration between the village's associations: the Pro Loco Morra De Sanctis, founded in September 2008 by a group of young people dedicated to their local area, the Forum Giovanile Morrese, and the Associazione per il Bene Comune, with the patronage of the Municipality of Morra De Sanctis. It is the same social fabric that brings the Morra calendar to life throughout the year, from the Immaculate Conception bonfires to autumn food and wine events.

Morra De Sanctis, the home of Francesco De Sanctis

Those who arrive for the Carnival will find a village worth exploring beyond the festivities. Morra De Sanctis owes its name to Francesco De Sanctis, the 19th-century literary critic and politician who was born here; the town preserves the house-museum dedicated to him, along with the castle that overlooks the settlement. The local calendar is marked by religious and civil festivals typical of Alta Irpinia, from the patronal feast of Saint Roch in August to the Marian celebrations in the districts during spring.

When it takes place

The Mascarata follows the movable Carnival calendar and changes date every year: the most recent documented edition was held on Sunday, March 2, 2025. As it is a community festival, the announcement usually arrives just a few weeks in advance through the channels of the Pro Loco and the Municipality. Those planning a trip to Irpinia during the Carnival period should verify the date before setting off, and keep in mind that dozens of other carnival events are concentrated in the same province within inland Campania.

Mascarata Carnival — edition 2026

No official date or announcement from the Pro Loco, the Municipality, or local press has been found for the 2026 edition of the Mascarata Carnival in Morra De Sanctis. The festival follows the movable Carnival calendar and is usually announced just a few weeks in advance: the date indicated is therefore a provisional reference, to be verified with the organizers before planning your visit.

The Mascarata Carnival in Morra De Sanctis, in the province of Avellino, does not currently have a publicly announced 2026 edition. Searches on the channels of the Pro Loco Morra De Sanctis, the Municipality's website, and the Irpinian press have yielded neither a date nor a program for the current year.

The festival remains part of the Alta Irpinia carnival calendar, and its recurrence depends, as with many village festivals, on the organization of local associations. For updated information, it is best to contact the Pro Loco directly (tel. +39 347 9991670, [email protected]) or follow the communications from the Municipality of Morra De Sanctis.
