Offshore sailing regattas in the Xifonio Gulf of Augusta
Every year, at the start of summer, the Xifonio Gulf in Augusta (province of Syracuse, Sicily) becomes the stage for one of the most popular sailing events in Eastern Sicily. The Marisicilia Cup and the Xifonio Cup bring together dozens of offshore sailboats competing for trophies along a windward-leeward course set in the gulf's waters, right in front of the city.
Under the same banner, three distinct competitions take place, all part of the Italian Sailing Federation (FIV, VII Zone) calendar:
Boats compete in Regatta (with a measurement certificate) and Cruising (open to hulls without a certificate) classes, ensuring space for both competitive crews and casual sea enthusiasts.
The true hallmark of the event is the collaboration between the Sicily Maritime Command of the Italian Navy, the Augusta Nautical Club (delegated by the FIV for the technical management of the races), and the Icob association of Augusta. This synergy allows the public to enter the Terravecchia naval base, which is normally off-limits, transforming it for a few days into a showcase of maritime culture.
Alongside the regattas, the event features the Italian Navy open day: base tours, exhibitions, demonstrations by specialized units, and activities dedicated to schools and families. It is a rare opportunity to get closer to the world of the Navy and discover the historical and port heritage of Augusta, a city with a deep bond with the sea and its roadstead, one of the largest in the Mediterranean.
Overlooking the Xifonio Gulf, Augusta has always been a reference point for sailing in Eastern Sicily. The event celebrates this maritime vocation and attracts owners and crews from Syracuse and the entire region, in a weekend that combines sporting competition, spectacle, and popular celebration along the coast.
The Augusta sailing event returns to the Xifonio Gulf on June 27 and 28, 2026, based at the Terravecchia naval base. The 10th edition of the Marisicilia Cup, the 18th edition of the Xifonio Cup, and the 7th edition of the Eastern Sicily Port System Authority Trophy will take place.
The event is organized by the Sicily Maritime Command in collaboration with the Icob association of Augusta and the Augusta Nautical Club, and is accompanied by the Italian Navy's naval base open day, which is open to the public. The official presentation will be held on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, at 5:00 PM, at the Officers' Club of Augusta.
The detailed program for the 2026 regattas (start times, courses, and open day activities) will be announced during the official presentation on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, at 5:00 PM, at the Officers' Club of Augusta.
Augusta can be reached by car via the A18/A19 motorway (Augusta exit), or by train (Augusta station on the Messina-Syracuse line). The regattas take place in the Xifonio Gulf, in front of the city; land activities and the open day are held at the Terravecchia naval base.
Watching the regattas from the coast is free. The Italian Navy open day is open to the public. To register for the regattas, please contact the Augusta Nautical Club according to the FIV notice of race.
Bring binoculars to follow the boats offshore and check the opening hours of the naval base, which are announced in the days leading up to the event.
