Flores de Mayo and Santacruzan: A Filipino Tradition

The Santacruzan (from the Spanish santa cruz, "holy cross") is one of the most beloved Marian devotions in the Philippines, introduced by Spanish missionaries in the 19th century. It represents the culmination of the Flores de Mayo, the "flowers of May" offered to the Virgin Mary throughout the month. The procession pays homage to the discovery of Christ's Cross in Jerusalem by Queen Helena, mother of Emperor Constantine, according to ancient Christian tradition.

The Procession of the Reynas

The visual heart of the festival is the parade of the reynas (queens): young women in elegant gowns walking under flower-adorned arches, each representing a biblical or symbolic figure. Highlights include Reyna Elena, carrying the discovered cross, accompanied by the queens of Faith, Hope, and Charity. Accompanied by hymns and prayers, the procession unites religious solemnity with the beauty of Filipino folk tradition.

The celebration is promoted by the Santa Felicita e Figli Martiri parish, entrusted to the Vocationist Fathers (Society of Divine Vocations), and brought to life by local Filipino groups such as the "Alliance of Two Hearts" and the "San Marco Community."
