A month of popular devotion between Viale Partenope and the streets of Nuova Gordiani, in the heart of Rome's Municipio V
The Marian Month in Gordiani is one of the most deeply rooted popular religious festivals in the eastern suburbs of Rome, within the Municipality of Rome and the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital, in the Lazio region. It takes place in the Prenestino-Labicano district (Q. VII), between Nuova Gordiani and Viale Partenope, and is promoted by the Santa Maria Madre della Misericordia Parish on Via dei Gordiani 365, established on July 15, 1952, in a church designed by architect Tullio Rossi and visited by John Paul II on May 1, 1983.
This is not a staged festival, but a grassroots celebration: it is the local residents, together with the Agesci Roma 92 scout group, who set up the small wooden grotto that houses the Marian icon every year. It is a ritual that has been repeated for over fifteen years and has become the defining identity event for this part of the city.
The heart of the Marian Month is simple and daily. Throughout May, shortly after 7:00 PM, the icon of Santa Maria Madre della Misericordia is displayed on the pedestrian island of Viale Partenope, where the Rosary and the Salve Regina are recited. People gather in the street, amidst the noise of traffic and the wind, often in the dozens: men and women, families, and the neighborhood's elderly. It is perhaps the most authentic image of contemporary Roman popular religiosity, the kind not seen in the basilicas of the historic center.
Alongside evening prayer, the parish organizes a series of community initiatives throughout the month: the pilgrimage to the Santuario della Madonna del Divino Amore, the family festival with a shared lunch, theatrical performances by the oratory, musical groups, and food stalls in the parish courtyard. May 13, the memorial of Our Lady of Fatima, is traditionally one of the most well-attended moments.
The Marian Month does not end on May 31: the true conclusion arrives on the first Sunday of June, with the Patronal Feast. In the preceding days—Thursday, Friday, and Saturday—three liturgical preparation meetings are held. Then, on Sunday, the solemn procession with the statue of the Madonna travels through the streets of Nuova Gordiani, with a prayer stop in front of the Viale Partenope icon, concluding with Holy Mass in the Oratory courtyard. A large part of the neighborhood's inhabitants participates in the procession: hundreds of people accompanying the statue among the public housing blocks, decorated balconies, and festive lights.
For years, the community nurtured a desire: that the icon would no longer be seasonal, but find a permanent home. This wish was fulfilled in 2026. On the evening of June 23, 2026, at the corner of Viale Partenope and Via Monteforte Irpino, a permanent Marian shrine was inaugurated and blessed, featuring a mosaic depicting the Madonna del Divino Amore, created by master mosaic artist Alessandra Minicozzi in her Pigneto studio.
The ceremony, which was very well attended despite the intense heat, opened with Mass in the parish church and continued with a procession to the shrine site, where Monsignor Renato Tarantelli, auxiliary bishop and vicar of the Diocese of Rome, imparted the solemn blessing. Also present were Mauro Caliste, president of Municipio V, and Francesco Sirleto, president of the APS Partenope. Luciano Di Pietrantonio gave a speech on the history of Roman devotion to the Madonna del Divino Amore, from the war years to the present. The evening concluded with refreshments in the garden of the APS Partenope headquarters.
In 2026, the neighborhood once again gathered every evening in May in front of the icon displayed on the pedestrian island of Viale Partenope for the recitation of the Rosary, and on the first Sunday of June, it accompanied the statue of the Madonna in the solemn procession through the streets of Nuova Gordiani, concluding with Mass in the Oratory courtyard.
The novelty of the year arrived a few weeks later. On June 23, 2026, after Mass at the parish and a procession to the site, the Marian shrine requested by the parish community was inaugurated: a mosaic of the Madonna del Divino Amore created by master artist Alessandra Minicozzi. The solemn blessing was imparted by Monsignor Renato Tarantelli, vicar of the Diocese of Rome, in the presence of the president of Municipio V Mauro Caliste and Francesco Sirleto for the APS Partenope. The icon, which for over fifteen years had only returned in May, finally has a permanent home in the heart of the neighborhood.
