The Feast of Maria Santissima Assunta in Cielo is one of the most deeply rooted devotional events in Gallipoli, in the province of Lecce, in the heart of the Apulian Salento. The celebrations take place around Ferragosto in the picturesque historic center of the island, between the Co-Cathedral of Sant'Agata and the confraternity church of Santa Maria degli Angeli. They are managed by the Venerable Confraternity of Santa Maria degli Angeli, which organizes both the religious and secular programs.
The path of preparation begins with the novena in the days leading up to the feast at the confraternity church. The most anticipated moment is the solemn procession that, on the eve of the feast, winds through the characteristic alleys of the old town accompanied by the "Santa Cecilia - Cittร di Gallipoli" Brass Band, before returning to the Co-Cathedral. On Ferragosto, August 15th, the day is marked by solemn Eucharistic celebrations, ceremonial gunfire, and performances by the band as it marches through the streets of the ancient village.
Alongside the spiritual dimension, the festival offers a rich secular calendar. Luminarie (artistic light displays) illuminate the streets of the historic center, giving the city a unique atmosphere, while brass band concerts and musical evenings take place in the squares and open spaces. The most spectacular moment is the fireworks display that, late at night, sets the sky ablaze above the mercantile port, with the lights reflecting on the waters of the Ionian Sea before thousands of spectators.
The event concludes with the "Rione in Festa", a convivial evening featuring local flavors, street performers, and traveling shows that bring the alleys around the church of Santa Maria degli Angeli to life. It is a way to revitalize the neighborhood and strengthen the bond between the community and its traditions.
For Gallipoli, the Feast of the Assumption represents much more than a religious anniversary: it is a moment of collective identity that unites faith, history, and conviviality. In the middle of August, when the Pearl of the Ionian is bustling with tourists, the solemnity blends the devotion of the locals with the curiosity of visitors, offering an authentic glimpse into the popular traditions of Puglia.
The 2026 edition of the Feast of Maria Santissima Assunta in Cielo in Gallipoli is expected, as every year, during the Ferragosto period in the city's historic center. The program is organized by the Venerable Confraternity of Santa Maria degli Angeli and traditionally includes a novena, Eucharistic celebrations at the Co-Cathedral, a solemn procession with a brass band, illuminations, and fireworks from the port.
The official dates and the program for the 2026 edition have not yet been published. For updates, please refer to the official channels of the Confraternity.
The celebrations take place in the historic center of Gallipoli (LE), between the Co-Cathedral of Sant'Agata and the church of Santa Maria degli Angeli. The fireworks are launched from the mercantile port.
By car: take the Gallipoli exit from the SS101 Lecce-Gallipoli road. By train: Gallipoli station (Ferrovie del Sud Est). The nearest airport is Brindisi-Casale, about 80 km away.
All religious and secular events take place outdoors and are free to attend.
Gallipoli is very crowded during Ferragosto: it is advisable to book accommodation well in advance and explore the historic center on foot.
