Majo Festival (Lu Maje)

An ancient rite between the sacred and the profane

The Majo Festival, which locals call Lu Maje, is one of the oldest and most fascinating celebrations in San Giovanni Lipioni, a tiny village in the upper Vasto area perched in the province of Chieti, Abruzzo. Every spring, around May 1st, the entire community gathers to welcome the arrival of the new season with a ritual that blends pagan elements with Christian devotion. Its origins are lost in time: scholars recognize traces of ancient abundance and fertility cults, linked to the veneration of trees and the regenerative forces of nature, which have been intertwined with religious Christian elements over the centuries.

The Majo, the cyclamen-covered cross

The absolute star of the festival is the Majo: a wooden cross enclosed in a circle and entirely covered in flowers. Its preparation begins on April 30th, when the village youth head into the surrounding woods to gather seasonal cyclamens, which are then tied into small bunches and attached to the cross to create a propitiatory symbol shining with color. It is a moment of collective work and celebration, marked by conviviality and a lunch offered by the Pro Loco.

The procession and the door-to-door well-wishing songs

The heart of the festival is May 1st. After the morning religious celebrations, including mass at the Chapel of Santa Liberata and the procession toward the Mother Church, the most characteristic moment begins in the afternoon: singers and musicians traverse the entire village, house by house, stopping in front of every door. The singers dedicate a personalized well-wishing rhyme to each family, invoking healing, happy marriages, and good harvests, known as bonànne. In return, families offer sweets, prosciutto, ventricina, and cheeses, in an atmosphere of joy and exchange that lasts until evening.

The Chapel of Santa Liberata

Indissolubly linked to the festival is the Chapel of Santa Liberata, built outside the village between the 12th and 13th centuries and recently restored. With its rose window and mullioned windows, it remains the spiritual center of the tradition: from here, the procession begins, accompanying the statues of the saints toward the Mother Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie.

Organized by the Pro Loco together with the Municipality of San Giovanni Lipioni and other local entities, the event is a deeply felt and well-attended appointment, capable of attracting visitors and emigrants returning home for the occasion.
