“One town, a thousand stories”: Friday evenings in May dedicated to reading
In the heart of the Agro Nolano, the Municipality of Cicciano (Metropolitan City of Naples, Campania) participates every spring in “Il Maggio dei Libri”, the national campaign promoted by the Ministry of Culture’s Centre for Books and Reading to highlight the social value of literature. The Cicciano edition, titled “One town, a thousand stories,” turns every Friday in May into an event dedicated to books, dialogue, and the discovery of local identity.
The meetings are held in the Town Hall Council Chamber, which serves as a literary salon open to the community. Each evening focuses on an author from the Naples hinterland, invited to discuss their work and engage with the public. The administration’s stated goal is to “build community, spark emotions, and offer spaces for discussion,” while celebrating local voices and narrative heritage.
The calendar alternates between fiction, non-fiction, and poetry, showcasing both established authors and young debutants. Topics include local memory, food and wine culture, and contemporary poetry. The simple, participatory format aims to unite different generations through culture.
The festival is promoted by the Cicciano Municipal Administration, through the Department of Culture and the Department of Education. The initiative is part of a broader effort to promote reading, which has also involved local schools through dedicated meetings and projects for students.
Maggio dei Libri is an opportunity to experience reading as a collective rather than a solitary act. In a town like Cicciano, the festival offers citizens the chance to meet authors up close, discover stories linked to their home, and rediscover the pleasure of reading together. All events are free and open to everyone.
The 2026 festival, promoted by the Cicciano Municipal Administration and the Department of Culture, enlivened the Fridays of May with four literary events in the Council Chamber, all starting at 6:00 PM. The slogan “One town, a thousand stories” guided a journey dedicated to authors from the Naples hinterland and the storytelling of the local area, spanning fiction, poetry, and wine culture.
All meetings are held at 6:00 PM in the Council Chamber of the Municipality of Cicciano.
