Faith, traditional games, and the famous «Pollo allo Schito» in the Cilento village of Gioi
Some festivals don't need grand stages to be memorable. The Madonna dello Schito Festival in Gioi, located in the municipality of the same name in the province of Salerno, Campania, is one of them: two days at the start of June when the entire village moves outside the walls to an ancient church nestled in the greenery, renewing a tradition passed down through generations. This is not an event built for tourism, but a festival that visitors can experience from the inside, sitting at the same table as the locals.
It is organized primarily by the village youth, who manage to involve the entire community every year: some cook, some set up, some bring chairs, and others prepare the games. This passing of the torch between generations explains why, in a village of just over a thousand inhabitants, the festival remains so vibrant.
The Church of the Madonna dello Schito, also known as di Loreto, stands a little over a mile from the historic center of Gioi, along the provincial road descending toward Omignano Scalo. It is a simple building with a single nave and one altar, surrounded by a green area that becomes the village's open-air living room during the festival days.
Its existence is documented since at least 1731, when it was explicitly mentioned in an ecclesiastical visitation act dated April 25 of that year, conducted by Father Giuseppe De Lorenzo; tradition holds that it was built by the will of the people of Gioi. The name «Schito» derives from querceto (oak grove), the vegetation that historically characterized the area: and it is to an oak grove that the local legend refers, according to which the Madonna was miraculously glimpsed while some pigs were rooting among the oaks.
The religious heart of the festival takes place on the morning of the second day, with the Open-Air Holy Mass celebrated in front of the church, followed immediately by the procession with the venerated image of Maria Santissima dello Schito. In recent years, the committee has restored the ancient historical route of the procession, the one that the people of Gioi used to follow through the paths and the provincial road: a gesture that has restored the celebration's original spirit.
The specialty that gives the festival its gastronomic identity is the «Pollo allo Schito», prepared in large quantities by volunteers and served during the community lunch on the Sunday of the festival. The previous evening, the stalls offer the more direct flavors of Cilento cuisine: sandwiches with bacon, sausage, stew, and frittata, to be enjoyed outdoors under the trees.
It is worth noting that Gioi is also known for its soppressata, the iconic cured meat of inland Cilento: those who arrive for the festival find an excellent opportunity to discover a culinary tradition that goes far beyond the two days of celebration.
The other unique feature of the festival is the traditional games, reserved for both children and adults: tug-of-war, sack races, and the greasy pole enliven the final afternoon, bringing back a repertoire of entertainment that long predates the era of screens.
The opening evening is dedicated to live music, with a guest band and a DJ set that keep the party going until late, in an atmosphere more like a village fair than a concert.
Those who attend the festival have the chance to discover one of the most characteristic villages in the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park. Gioi stretches out on top of a hill at about 680 meters above sea level, overlooking two valleys, and preserves the layout of a fortified village with medieval gates and noble palaces. The historic center, compact and quiet, can be visited in just over an hour and perfectly rounds off the day of celebration.
Tradition sets the festivities around the first Sunday of June. The dates may shift by a few days depending on the calendar: in 2025, the festival was held on May 31 and June 1, while in 2026 it fell on June 1 and 2, taking advantage of the Republic Day long weekend.
The 2026 edition of the Madonna dello Schito Festival fell during the June 2nd long weekend, a choice that allowed many emigrated residents of Gioi to return to the village for the occasion. As per tradition, everything took place in the green area around the ancient church of Schito, along the provincial road connecting Gioi to Omignano Scalo, in the Municipality of Gioi (province of Salerno, Campania).
The evening of June 1st opened the festivities at 8:00 PM with live music by the group I Bottari di Macerata, followed by a DJ set, while food stalls offered sandwiches with bacon, sausage, stew, and frittata.
June 2nd was the day of devotion: Open-Air Holy Mass in honor of the Madonna dello Schito and immediately after, the procession with the venerated image of Maria SS. dello Schito, along the historical route that the committee restored. This was followed by the community lunch, featuring the famous «Pollo allo Schito», and an afternoon enlivened by traditional games — tug-of-war, sack races, and the greasy pole — for adults and children alike.
Once again this year, the organization was entrusted primarily to the village youth, who, with the support of local associations, managed to involve the entire community.
Detailed times for the June 2nd events were not released by the organizers.
Gioi is located in inland Cilento, in the province of Salerno. By car: take the Omignano or Vallo della Lucania exit from the SS18 Cilentana, then follow the provincial road uphill toward Gioi. The Church of the Madonna dello Schito is found along the provincial road connecting Gioi to Omignano Scalo, just over a mile before the town center.
Omignano Scalo station on the Naples-Reggio Calabria line (regional stops), or Vallo della Lucania-Castelnuovo station, which is better served; from there, continue by car or local bus connections.
During the festival days, parking is available along the provincial road near the church: it is advisable to arrive early, as space is limited. The festival area is outdoors and on natural terrain: comfortable shoes are recommended.
Participation in the festival is free and open to all. You only pay for what you consume at the food stalls and the community lunch, at popular prices.
For updates on dates and the program, it is best to follow the channels of the Municipality of Gioi and local associations, as well as the Cilento press, which publishes the details of the festivities every year.
