The religious and folk festival of Villa Scorciosa, blending faith and tradition in Piazza San Carlo

The Madonna delle Grazie Festival is the most cherished event in Villa Scorciosa, a small hillside hamlet in the municipality of Fossacesia, in the Province of Chieti, nestled in the heart of Abruzzo overlooking the Costa dei Trabocchi. Every year, between late June and early July, the entire community gathers in Piazza San Carlo to honor the Virgin of Grace through a blend of religious celebrations and folk festivities organized by the local festival committee.
The spiritual heart of the festival is the procession of the statue of the Madonna and Baby Jesus, which winds through the streets of the village, followed by the faithful, the clergy, and the brass band. Holy Masses are celebrated in the church of San Carlo, serving as a moment of reflection for the residents of Villa Scorciosa and those returning to the village for the occasion. The day begins early with the sound of fireworks and symphonic marches performed by the band in the square.
Alongside the religious dimension, the festival features a vibrant social component. Band concerts, dance evenings with orchestras, and musical performances take place in Piazza San Carlo, continuing late into the night. Illuminations light up the village streets, while traditional firework displays conclude the evenings in a joyful atmosphere that brings together both young and old.
The festival is part of Fossacesia's rich summer calendar, the Bellestate program, which every year hosts dozens of events across the historic center, the seaside, the Abbey of San Giovanni in Venere, and the hillside hamlets. Villa Scorciosa, with its Piazza San Carlo, remains a symbolic location for local folk traditions, set in a landscape that connects the hills of the Chieti hinterland to the sea of the Costa dei Trabocchi.
The Madonna delle Grazie Festival in Villa Scorciosa, a hamlet of Fossacesia (Chieti, Abruzzo), scheduled for early July 2026, has been postponed by the festival committee as a sign of mourning for the community. As of today, no new official date or definitive program for the festivities has been announced.
When the festival takes place, it will feature its usual blend of devotion and popular tradition: the procession of the Madonna statue through the streets of the hamlet, Holy Masses in the church of San Carlo, symphonic marches by the band, dance evenings with orchestras, and fireworks in Piazza San Carlo. It is recommended to check the Municipality of Fossacesia's channels for updates on the new date.
